Preach : Vince Staples
“I just know I never want to do the same thing twice. I don’t care about any of this shit. I don’t care about album sales, I don’t care about the radio. I just want to do cool shit, because that’s what everybody was doing in time periods that matter. You gotta think about it: We’re about to have probably a decade or 20 years of music that no one remembers anything from. Like, who’s the rock star right now? We got Kanye West, that’s it. That’s fucking sad. There are no Mick Jaggers, no Steve Tylers, none of those fucking people. No Keith Richards. That shit doesn’t exist anymore. No fucking Jimi Hendrix.”
To Apple, Love Taylor
I write this to explain why I’ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries.
I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.
This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.
These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.
I realize that Apple is working towards a goal of paid streaming. I think that is beautiful progress. We know how astronomically successful Apple has been and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the 3 month trial period… even if it is free for the fans trying it out.
Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right.
But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.
Yes…we cried…just a little.
Have a wonderful Holiday everyone!

Beats Music : First Impression
The Humanization of music streaming. In terms of discover where do people discover music from? Algorithms…probably not…pother people yes. We absolutely loved LA Indie 103 radio. Made of of almost all specialty shows with trusted curated from all different genres…. and KCRW and their DJ’s who each have their own style. This (at least as of right now) is what we currently love about beats…the human factor. As much music that we listen to and love here to have the time to give a serious and thoughtful listen to then create curate and pull into one place all the music we love would take us more hours than exist in a day. What beats in doing for curation is what with drive music fans to dig deeper….and maybe go pick up an album to look at the liner notes.
Oh yeah….and one of our favorites Trent Reznor is Cheirf Creative Officer.
We known for a while just from observing interaction on our clients channels but here is actually data to show that people spend more time on social media channels while at work.
Calling all musician’s this keynote is an inspiration must watch…..with a live demo of how Dave tracked songs as a kid in his bedroom.
Evolution or technology has really surpassed mankind.
Foursquare for Businesses
Foursquare yesterday announced the new Foursquare for business allowing business owners to claim their business, gain more access to analytics and marketing tools. We love this for a few reasons but #1 that Foursquare is opening up their platform to let business owners and marketers use Foursquare’s killer location location technology and social platform. The less handholding social platforms have to do and the more open range they give businesses to use their platform as a tool the more business will be not only using these platforms but spending! Tic tock Twitter time to open up that analytics platform to all verified accounts.
So not only can our favorite record store that we check in weekly offer us a deal if we are in a certain vicinity to our location, but friends of ours can also be alerted to the deal.
We’re waiting to see what kind of amazing offers American Express, who in our opinion is the most socially and small business friendly financial institution (don’t you want someone to smile at you while they are taking your money?), will be offering through this!
