MOTOPONY + PEGBOARD NERDS
COLLABORATE TO GET “FREE”
Seattle’s Motopony are excited to announce the release of a very unexpected collaboration with electronic duo Pegboard Nerds on the track “Free,” which dropped on 8/25 worldwide on all major digital services.
“In an age where every band sounds like an easily picked out handful of other bands, Motopony is a unique creature…a band that is all their own.” – Baeble Music
Motopony has a stellar reputation for their melodic and always experimental Psych Folk, but with the group’s mastermind Daniel Blue decided to take this experimentation a bit further and revisit his dance music roots. Blue came of age in the Seattle underground electronic rave scene in Seattle’s post 90’s/grunge slump. Blue had struggled for years on how to marry his band’s style and aesthetic with the dance music he was inspired by in his youth. His main frustration stemmed from the fact that he had a lot to say, and it had been ingrained in his psyche that dance music was not the forum for art with a message. To him the two ideas were not compatible. Collaborating with Pegboard Nerds and writer composer Elizaveta completely transformed Blue’s thinking. “I learned to write on a 3 string guitar, but long before that I learned to dance to 4-on-the-floor house, dub and breakbeats,” says Blue. “There’s something deep in me that has always wanted to sing to those beats as well. When Pegboard Nerds brought us a trance version of ‘Free’ it re-awakened something in me. Pegboard Nerds showed me that my message isn’t destroyed by an easy beat.”
For Blue, freedom came not only from breaking Motopony out of the restrictive genre box he had figuratively drawn them into, but the song is also about his personal liberation from the past behaviors and thinking that kept him from living his best life and creating his best work.
The band went on KEXP the morning of the release and played “Free” and talking with John Richards about the collaboration and played the song live on Amazon music.

The idea of Motopony started to bubble in Blue’s mind while reading a book called The Spell of the Sensuous by David Abrams. Blue came to the conclusion that a life lived in poor relations with the world around oneself was perhaps the cause of all the sickness, war and suffering in the world. After absorbing the author’s words, Blue made the choice to look at himself as part of the world and not just a user of it. The resulting joy and empowerment of that moment was infectious and thrilling, and his musical collective, Motopony was created in celebration of the revelation.
“…both familiar and refreshingly skewed, darting away from comparisons” – Uncut
As Daniel’s love for music and world view grew, he partnered with a local hip-hop producer Buddy Ross (Frank Ocean) with whom he made the self-titled Motopony album that found itself on noncom airways all over the world (and has garnered over 12 Million streams on Spotify). They immediately found themselves very busy, bringing their electrifying and eclectic live show to fans across the globe. Subsequent releases followed including an EP released in 2015 recorded at the iconic Abbey Road studios. Motopony’s worldwide appeal has lead to the band playing throughout North America and Europe to as far as India.
Michael Parsberg and Alex Odden joined forces in 2012 to create Pegboard Nerds, beloved characters who personify the infectious energy of millennials. Since their inception the Nerds have accumulated millions of streams, a dedicated fanbase dubbed #NerdNation and have worked with some of the biggest names in electronic music from Krewella, Excision and Nicky Romero and have been proclaimed a “must-see act” from Billboard.
