Gold Certified New Zealand music award winner Jamie McDell has released her stunning new EP Beach House out today worldwide. Jamie has been a working  musician for close to 15 years and this collection of songs came from the weight of navigating a career as a creative, especially under the limitations of the pandemic, that  left her feeling exhausted and burnt out on the fickleness of the music industry. In January 2023, when travel restrictions had eased, McDell returned home to New Zealand, taking the opportunity to connect with family and travel across the ditch (the Tasman Sea) to record some new tracks.

The sanctuary of being at her husband’s family-built beach house gave her the space to express and exercise her self-doubt through songwriting. She was also able to reconnect in person with her producer and manager Nash Chambers at his sister, Kasey Chambers’  studio to record  the songs that would become the Beach House EP.  The title track, “Beach House,”  is a catharsis of feeling born out of the frustration Jamie had towards the fickle nature of the music business. At the time of  writing the song she had serious thoughts about leaving music and was three months into a job search.  The second song “Madeline” started to come together while Jamie was still living in Canada. It is about the road less traveled and the growth and fulfillment that transpire from uncertainty. It was inspired by a group of women in her friend circle, all of whom had left bad relationships out of a determination to be anything but confined or defined. The third song that rounds out the EP is a cover of Tracy Chapman’s  “Talkin Bout a Revolution.” Jamie was drawn to the message and ethos of the song, which  resonate just as strong, if not stronger now than when it was originally released in 1988.

McDell, who is now 30 started her career at 16, was signed by EMI, and went on to achieve Gold Certified Album sales and receive multiple New Zealand Music Award nominations. She abandoned her major label roots to pursue music that was closer to her heart and began writing and recording in Nashville.  In March 2017 Jamie made a trip to Nashville, looking for a change of scenery and to connect with the environment that birthed much of the music throughout her youth. It’s here she wrote the songs that would make up the fabric for her third record “Extraordinary Girl”. She met with ex-pat Australian producer Nash Chambers for coffee one day and decided they shared the same musical values. Not long after that meeting McDell arranged to fund her first independent record Extraordinary Girl, which was recorded over the space of two days at House of Blues studio in Nashville. She then returned home for the albums’ release, promotion, and supporting tours throughout New Zealand and Australia.

After opening a U.S.  tour for Robert Ellis (Texas Piano Man) in early 2020, she would then visit Nashville once again, teamed up with Chambers in his eastside studio, and gather the amazing musical talents of Dan Dugmore, Jedd Hughes, Dennis Crouch, Shawn Fichter, Jerry Roe, Jimmy Wallace, Tony Lucido and Ross Holmes, along with guests such as the McCrary Sisters, Robert Ellis, Erin Rae, and Tom Busby (Busby Marou). Her self-titled album, Jamie McDell, released in 2022, contains some of McDell’s most brutally honest writing and performances, while the production takes the listener on a modern journey through 70s folk and country blended with a healthy dose of roots and rock. This record became Jamie’s fourth full-length release that was praised by media from around the globe.

Jamie is returning to the U.S. playing songs from this EP at her first shows on U.S. soil since early 2020.

Gold Certified New Zealand music award winner Jamie McDell has released the “Beach House” single off the Beach House EP due out June 16th.

Having been a working musician for over a decade, especially under the limitations of the pandemic left McDell feeling exhausted and burnt out on the fickleness of the music industry, so in January 2023, when travel restrictions had eased, McDell returned to New Zealand. Jamie took the opportunity to connect with family and travel across the ditch (the Tasman Sea) to record some new tracks. McDell was one-foot outside  of music and three months into a job search when she wrote  “Beach House.” The sanctuary of being at her husband’s family-built beach house gave her the sauce to express and exercise her self-doubt through songwriting. She was also able to reconnect in person with her producer and manager Nash Chambers at his sister, Kasey Chambers’  studio to record what would become the Beach House EP.  Among the recordings at Kasey’s studio, was “Beach House,”  “Madeline”, a tale of a dreamer, and a 1988 Tracy Chapman cover “Talkin’Bout a Revolution,”  a sentiment that is just as relevant today.

McDell, who is now 30 started her career at 16, was signed by EMI, and went on to achieve Gold Album sales and receive multiple New Zealand Music Award nominations. She abandoned her major label roots to pursue music that was closer to her heart and began writing and recording in Nashville.  In March 2017 Jamie made a trip to Nashville, looking for a change of scenery and to connect with the environment that birthed much of the music throughout her youth. She then returned home for the albums’ release, promotion, and supporting tours throughout New Zealand and Australia.

After opening a US tour for Robert Ellis (Texas Piano Man) in early 2020, she would then visit Nashville once again, team with Chambers in his eastside studio and gather the amazing musical talents of Dan Dugmore, Jedd Hughes, Dennis Crouch, Shawn Fichter, Jerry Roe, Jimmy Wallace, Tony Lucido and Ross Holmes, along with guests such as the McCrary Sisters, Robert Ellis, Erin Rae, and Tom Busby (Busby Marou). Her self-titled album, released in 2022, contains some of McDell’s most brutally honest writing and performances, while the production takes the listener on a modern journey through 70s folk and country blended with a healthy dose of roots and rock. This record became Jamie’s fourth full-length release that was praised by Americana UK noting her ‘“superb storytelling,”  Twangville stating that ‘McDell writes with an enticing mix of strength and vulnerability,” and Holler Country drawing comparison to “Patty Griffin’s grit and The Chicks commanding vocal strength.”

McDell will be playing select shows in the U.S. to promote the EP including the Moccasin Creek Festival and a show in Chicago with Adeem the Artist.

Critically acclaimed  New Zealand born singer songwriter Jamie McDell releases her highly anticipated self-titled album today through ABC Music.

The enchanting artist recorded her fourth studio album in Nashville, teaming up with Nash Chambers in his eastside studio and drawing on the amazing musical talents of Dan Dugmore, Jedd Hughes, Dennis Crouch, Shawn Fichter, Jerry Roe, Jimmy Wallace, Tony Lucido and Ross Holmes, along with guests such as the McCrary Sisters, Robert Ellis, Erin Rae and Tom Busby.

Containing Jamie’s most brutally honest moments, in both writing and performance, this new long player features musicians and production that takes you on a modern journey through 70s folk and country, blended with a healthy dose of roots and rock.

The 13 track album includes Jamie’s singles ‘Dream Team’, ‘Not Ready Yet’ and the stunning current release, ‘Poor Boy’. This track has debuted in the Countrytown Radio Airplay chart and features Tom Busby of Busby Marou fame.  It was written by Jamie to acknowledge the powerful influence of her father. Jamie says, “I hope that he knows what a wonderful father he has been, how much he’s taught us about what’s truly important.”

Explaining how the partnership with Tom Busby came about, Jamie explains, “I had opened a show in Auckland, NZ for Busby Marou and that sparked the idea of me joining the boys on an Australian tour. Tom has been super supportive of my music ever since and I absolutely love the tone of his voice and how it elevates this track!   View acoustic video HERE

Born in New Zealand, at the age of 7 McDell’s father left his job at an Auckland law firm to shift her mother, younger sister and Jamie onto the high seas and began living aboard a yacht in the Mediterranean. It’s here Jamie wrote her first song, a sea shanty for the dolphins. Also on that yacht lived a small collection of her parents’ favorite cassette tapes, which luckily included albums by Jimmy Buffett, John Denver and James Taylor. The young artist quickly formed a particularly strong bond with these records and she fondly remembers watching her parents perform Buffett duets - and occasionally chiming in, learning how to harmonize with her mother. An eager learner, Jamie then picked up the guitar after studying her fathers’ John Denver chord book collection and has never looked back.

Though self-titled albums tend to be reserved for debuts, Jamie now at age 28, started in music as a teenager felt that this was the best representation of who she is, and is the sound of a woman who has found her voice. Her music pays tribute to traditional elements of country music while celebrating her  life story, that of her family, her unique perspective, and female narrative.

Jamie achieved a prolific amount in her formative years. Being signed to EMI at age 16 sparked the beginning of a successful musical journey, making her a household name across New Zealand. With the release of her debut album Six Strings and a Sailboat, which was certified Gold, went on to receive three NZ Music Award nominations, winning Best Pop Album of 2013. Then her sophomore record Ask Me Anything gained global attention, seeing the album track “Moon Shines Red” featured on American TV series Pretty Little Liars. In March 2017 Jamie made a trip to Nashville, looking for a change of scenery and to connect with the environment that birthed much of the music throughout her youth. She met with producer expat Aria Nominee Nash Chambers for coffee one day and decided they shared the same musical values and have been collaborating ever since.

Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter, Jamie McDell, has released her heartfelt new single “Not Ready Yet”, today via ABC Music.  “Not Ready Yet”, produced by Nash Chambers, is a precursor to Jamie’s upcoming self-titled album, set to drop on February 25, 2022 via ABC Music which is available for  pre-order HERE.

Discussing the sentiment behind the song, Jamie said, “I’ve always wanted to create a groove reminiscent of the 90s The Chicks, and I’m hoping this comes close. I had mumbled the falsetto chorus melody into my voice memos before jumping into a session with my producer Nash and Phil Barton. The lyrics came from a place of comfort in not knowing what’s next for me and taking my time to figure it out. Motherhood is something I want in the future, something that I’m really looking forward to if I’m to be so lucky. But I’m not ready yet and maybe, in today's world, that is all I should need to say.”

With a video for the single still in the works, Jamie and her partner created this breezy, carefree lyric video. Jamie says, “The Auckland lockdown meant I wasn't able to work with the director I'd planned to. My partner and I were lucky to be located at Pauanui Beach at the time, where we've spent nearly every summer for the past decade. We decided we could make some visuals out of the hike we do up the local mountain often. I've had many deep thoughts on this beautiful trail and it felt like it connected to the sentiment of the song, just reveling in every stage of the journey to who knows where.”  View HERE.

McDell’s fourth studio album was recorded in Nashville, the gifted singer-songwriter teaming up with Nash Chambers in his eastside studio and drawing on the amazing musical talents of Dan Dugmore, Jedd Hughes, Dennis Crouch, Shawn Fichter, Jerry Roe, Jimmy Wallace, Tony Lucido, and Ross Holmes, along with guests such as the McCrary Sisters, Robert Ellis, Erin Rae and Tom Busby (Busby Marou). JAMIE MCDELL RELEASES EXTRAORDINARY GIRL

JM_AlbumCover.jpg

LISTEN TO EXTRAORDINARY GIRL: HERE

“Ringing guitar chords are backed by atmospheric layers of keyboards, but the true stunner is McDell’s unforced voice, which has already led the Americana artist to gold certifications and award nominations in her native New Zealand.”  Rolling Stone on “Extraordinary Girl” (single)

New Zealand native Jamie McDell has released her third album Extraordinary Girl out worldwide today. Independently released, the record came together between Auckland, NZ and Nashville, TN where she recorded all the tracks with award-winning Australian producer Nash Chambers. It also features a hearty cast of country music legends including Kasey Chambers, Bill Chambers and Tami Neilson.

This record reflects her deep love of the music from her childhood. It formed the fundamental elements of what inspired her about songwriting the most - honest vocals, raw acoustic guitar and deep storytelling. Being drawn to artists like James Taylor and John Denver in her early years, she booked a trip to Nashville for a change of scenery a few years ago to connect with the environment that birthed the country/folk music of her youth. It was there that she wrote the songs that would make up the fabric of this record. On this work, McDell’s vocals are the most raw and vulnerable they have ever been: powerful, honest and reflect her core listening inspirations which also includes Patty Griffin and Alison Krauss. Putting the overall feeling of the album into words wasn’t easy, but McDell reflects on the personal challenge of leaving the comfort of home to write something that was honest and true. “Nashville was me getting out of my comfort zone and finding my way back to it. The listener is getting a sincerely true collection of stories that haven’t been tampered with since they were written. They are exactly what I felt like saying/singing at the time - raw, unpolished and deeply honest.”

“Showcasing more richness and density than the typical banjo and fiddle exercise, the album contains waves of haunting tremolo guitar ("Under the Bonnet"), fuzzy squalls and heavy distortion ("3AM," "Bad Attitude"), and a keen sense for crafting rewarding, sometimes even dramatic, vocal melodies.” –All Music

The singer-songwriter, who is in her mid-twenties, has achieved an enormous amount for someone so young. Being signed to EMI at age 16 sparked the beginning of a successful musical journey, making Jamie McDell a household name across New Zealand. With the release of her debut album Six Strings and a Sailboat, she went on to achieve Gold album sales, receive three NZ Music Award nominations and win Best Pop Album. Her sophomore record Ask Me Anything gained global attention, seeing album track “Moon Shines Red” featured on hit TV show Pretty Little Liars.

“The result of her long journey from home is a stunning, 12-song collection of raw confessionals, breezy anthems and plaintive storytelling rooted in the tradition of old school country and folk balladeers.” –Wide Open Country
