ISAAC WATTERS RELEASES SUN BAKED INDIE-ROCK  EXTENDED PLAY 001 VIA hi-res records

LISTEN TO EXTENDED PLAY 001: HERE

Los Angeles based artist, Isaac Watters, has released his new EP, Extended Play 001, his first release on the LA based label hi-res records. A four song EP featuring Watters’ singular blend of ethereal indie rock and post-punk, expansive storytelling narratives, and sun-baked shimmering sonics, and more. Extended Play 001 features his previously released singles including “Listen to the Wind,” “Sadness,” “Child in the Rain,” as well as the previously unheard “Sliding.”

Much of Watters’ work considers his place in the world, and the way in which an ever-evolving relationship between man and the wild can shape one’s innermost feelings, and vice versa. His music examines the wilderness not just as a setting, but as living, breathing force, whose presence and influence is felt even before it is consciously considered. “The mountains, the ocean, the slow disintegration of the world we have known, and the rise and fall of civilization,” says Watters when speaking on the meaning behind Extended Play 001

“The flailing power grid, the eroding canyons, the roads sliding down the edge of the coast into the sea.” For Watters, the wilderness envelopes nature and humanity, and weaves a thread between these forces that can never be unwound, for better and for worse. The wilderness does not end at the edges of nature, it reverberates across all corners of the Earth, and within its inhabitants.

“This EP is about living in Los Angeles. The dirt and grime and fire and smoke and the perfect light in all of it. After living here now for 20 years, I finally felt like I could make a record about it. It still has the deserts of Arizona and the cities and jungles of Mexico around the edges, but at its heart it's about Los Angeles,” says Watters. “It's about sitting alone on a desert mesa, seeing a cloud of dust rise up in the distance, and hoping that someone is coming for you. The mesa is your life, and the puff of dust you can barely see is the news you’ve been waiting for. Maybe it's a tiny rain cloud full of your dreams.”

“Sliding” finds Watters embodying his surroundings, and using erosion as a metaphor to deal with the nostalgia of a carefree childhood. “When I was young I was in love with everyone I saw / I was a green hill in the sun I was in love with everyone / Now every evening the ashes fall / It’s like I’m living on the foothills of a volcano.”

The way Isaac encapsulates the zero-sum balance of man’s impact on nature is staggeringly beautiful and equally tragic. Musically, he finds a balance in the sonic spectrum he glides across. A wonderful bass groove carves agony into the Earth, while floating keys and crisp guitars soar like an echo in the wind. “And when a piece of me crumbles in the middle of the night / I slide into town, disrupt a life,” sings Watters. “I take whole families with me, whole houses get torn / They are absorbed by my heartache, they join the storm.”

“A smooth green hill in the sun meets fire and rain and over time is eroded into canyons, and all the softness it once had is washed into the river,” says Watters. “A man reflects on the erosion of his life as he walks along the storm filled river.”

“Sliding” expands on the sonic universe Watters lays down on his previous singles “Child in the Rain,” “Sadness” and “Listen to the Wind.” Each filters through Watters’ past, his childhood, his experiences living in Los Angeles, Tucson, and Mexico City, and the world around. From nuclear fallout, to the widening rivers, to the borders that divide humanity, Watters’ carves nuanced stories and images into his music.

Watters found an incredible creative partner in hi-res records to help bring his vision to life. The label’s focus is on high quality productions. For Watters’ album, the choice was made to record, mix and master all in analog. It’s an audiophile’s dream, and something that connected with Watters’ creativity.

“Building these songs with the limitation of having only 24 tracks on the tape machine was a challenge, but also a driving element in the creativity of the production,”  says producer Matt Linesch. “Working solely on analog tape forces you to commit to your songwriting decisions, requires a high caliber of musicianship to execute the recordings, as well as requiring the skillset to see a production from beginning to end.”

ALICE HOWE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM RECORDED IN MUSCLE SHOALS AT FAME STUDIOS + CIRCUMSTANCE LP SET FOR RELEASE APRIL 21

WATCH THE CIRCUMSTANCE LP TRAILER

Los Angeles-based artist Alice Howe has announced her forthcoming LP, Circumstance, set for release on April 21st. Circumstance follows her 2019 debut, Visions, and an earlier EP, You’ve Been Away So Long – both of which led to her being dubbed a rising star in the folk world. Now, she has built on that success, expanding her horizons and continuing along the path that began long ago in her Newton, Massachusetts hometown, absorbing her parents’ eclectic record collection.

Produced and arranged by her creative partner, Freebo, a veteran bass player and former Bonnie Raitt band member, Circumstance presents a powerful, poetic collection of heartfelt expression – Howe’s answer to the call that keeps whispering in her ear. The singer-songwriter/guitarist displays her vocal prowess and introspective writing in abundance, mining both her heart and her musical tastes for a deep, personal journey across an Americana soundscape dotted with blues, folk, country, soul, and rock.

Recorded in two sessions at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where Etta James and Wilson Pickett once shook the walls, the record channels their spirits with 11 stirring tracks that pull no punches diving into the vagaries of the heart and her own personal journey. As an old soul inside a 30-something millennial, Howe puts her stamp on Americana’s venerable strands with 10 standout originals evoking both the classic singer-songwriters and the seminal music that once filled airwaves, roadhouses, and juke joints.

“I was just trying to be myself. That’s all it is,” she says. “It’s not trying to be a throwback. It’s not trying to be anything other than ‘This is who I am as an artist, as a singer, and a writer,’ and that’s what you get.”

As a reflection of her evolution, Circumstance turned out to be everything she hoped for – a personal, soulful nod to her influences and the music she loves, all of it sung old-school without auto-tuning. In spirit, it draws from admired singers – Alison Krauss or the 1970s Laurel Canyon circle — but its soul is pure Alice Howe.

by Joe Navas

LISTEN: “IS IT ENOUGH”

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Mark Erelli has unveiled “Is It Enough,” the latest from his forthcoming LP, Lay Your Darkness Down, due out on February 3rd via Soundly Music. "Is It Enough" fights back at the complacency that can set in when something or someone is taken for granted. It’s a full-throated appeal to really feel the love in your life and to never leave the ones you love doubting your capacity to show the same in return.

"There is a certain degree of restlessness baked into the artist’s job description. A creative soul must always be pushing further in, chasing a mode of expression that remains tantalizingly just beyond reach," Erelli says. "It’s easy to be so distracted by all this seeking that you miss the value of all that you already have. Really, what more should one need than to be loved?"

“Is It Enough” follows the emotionally raw “You,” which Erelli calls a “wrecking ball of a love song,” soulfully sultry “The Man I Am,” a tribute to Polly, his wife of 20 years, and lead single “You’re Gonna Wanna Remember This,” an epic track he co-wrote with his “musical big sister,” GRAMMY-winning artist Lori McKenna.

LISTEN: “THE MAN I AM”

In the summer of 2020, Erelli was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa ("RP"), a degenerative eye disease that causes progressive loss of night and peripheral vision, and can lead to complete blindness. After his terrifying diagnosis, he began to wonder - Does diminished eyesight decrease one’s insight? What does it mean to be ‘fully seen,’ by oneself and by others? These questions, along with his drive to regain his creative agency, are at the heart of Lay Your Darkness Down.

The tracks, though decorated with references to shadows, light, and obscured vision, are about resilience, love, and the human condition. The album is more than a collection of affirmations and optimism in the face of despair; it is a clarion call for anyone lost in the shadows. Yet Erelli doesn’t proclaim any easy answers for how to navigate the unknown. Instead, he squarely examines question after question, reveling in mysteries both great and small. With equal parts hope and resignation, he reminds us in the title track that our deepest challenges are more than a simple test of our endurance—they ultimately help us chart our course.

Lay Your Darkness Down is a reconciliation of life’s trials and human frailties, adversity transformed into finely-embroidered rock n’ roll, burning with urgency. “These aren’t songs about blindness. They’re songs I could only write once I realized what I was losing,” Erelli explained to The Boston Globe. “My impending blindness opened my eyes, and I was able to write from that new viewpoint.”

The album is available for pre-order HERE. Those who pre-order Lay Your Darkness Down through Bandcamp will receive an exclusive bonus track - a live acoustic performance of "You." Click HERE for more information.

FRANCES LUKE ACCORD RELEASES NEW SINGLE “SAINT MARY”

SAFE IN SOUND LP DUE OUT FEBRUARY 9TH VIA TWO-DALE RECORDS/TONE TREE MUSIC

Photo: Luke Jackson

LISTEN: “SAINT MARY”

Indie folk duo Frances Luke Accord (“FLA”) has unveiled “Saint Mary,” the latest from the latest harmony-laden track from Safe In Sound, their gorgeous LP out on February 9th via Two-Dale Records/Tone Tree Music.

The song was inspired by a cycling accident that nearly cost co-founder Nicholas Gunty his life, an experience that made him reflect on the fragility of being human:

It took time
To recoup what was taken Self in remaking Rethink this life
In my head oh
In our only life cycle
In the blink of an eye I was left

The whole world was ending But also rebirth
And also pretending Knowing what life is worth

“Saint Mary” follows album tracks “Window” and “In My Life,” a hopeful ballad and vocal tour de force reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel and Peter, Paul, & Mary which features FLA’s mentors and brethren, Darlingside. The band has recently released three other tracks from the album, “This Morning (ft. Liz Chidester),” and “Friend You’ve Been.”

LISTEN: “THIS MORNING”

When FLA’s Nicholas Gunty and Brian Powers put their songs and voices together, there is a delicate magic that commands the room to attention–NPR’s Mountain Stage has called them “the definition of lean-in music.” Their soft, contemplative vintage of indie-folk gestures toward a timelessness that honors the Simon & Garfunkel comparisons but pushes beyond into the world of Bon Iver, Jose Gonzalez, and progressive folk music.

Both raised in South Bend, Indiana, Gunty and Powers met and began performing together during their time at the University of Notre Dame. Their first release, Kandote, was a bold intercultural collaboration with the Barefoot Truth Children’s Choir in Uganda, a not-for- profit effort that continues to support the choir to this day.

Relocating to Chicago in 2013, the duo honed their songwriting craft while releasing two more self-produced EPs, laying the groundwork for their breakthrough debut full-length, Fluke, in 2016. This immersive, philosophically rich album set them off on their first national tour, which included support dates with Darlingside, Anaïs Mitchell, and The Ballroom Thieves.

A remote band since 2017, the duo’s DIY ethos has remained strong since Fluke. Still self- managing and producing, the duo has released two more EP’s, Silver & Gold (2019) and Sunnyside (2021)–the latter under their new label, Two-Dale Records–as well as a number of singles. Be sure to follow them at the links below for the latest news and updates.

ISAAC WATTERS RELEASES “CHILD IN THE RAIN” SINGLE FROM UPCOMING EXTENDED PLAY 001 OUT ON hi-res records JANUARY 17TH

“...unapologetically cerebral.” - Magnet Magazine

LISTEN TO “CHILD IN THE RAIN”: HERE

Los Angeles artist Isaac Watters has released his latest single “Child In The Rain” today. The song is the third offering from his forthcoming EP, Extended Play 001, out January 17th via Los Angeles-based label hi-res records, and follows previous singles “Listen To The Wind” and “Sadness.”

“When I was a kid in the desert in Arizona, whenever it rained it would rain really hard, the wash would fill up and we'd run down in it and wade out in the water. It was such a rare occurrence to have a river running through our backyard that we really enjoyed it,” says Watters. Now living in LA, he still thinks a lot about water and the desert, and the way that we’ve drastically altered the landscapes, especially in the last 100 years.

“Try driving around your city and think about where the streams used to be, how wide the river would get when it would flood, before we encased it in concrete. We've made this desert into something entirely different, less wild, more controlled,” says Watters. “It feels like we've robbed the landscape of its child-likeness, and dressed it up in a suit to go work in a tall building.”

The start of the song references a thesis project Watters did while studying architecture at the University of Southern California. The thesis proposed an International Museum of Border Conflict at San Diego’s Friendship Park along the US/Mexico border. Friendship Park serves as a meeting point for visitors from both countries to meet, complete with a border fence that separates the park and runs through to the ocean; this irony is not lost on Watters.

“In the last 15 years since my project the US border patrol has replaced what was just a chain link fence that families could meet at and talk through, with two thirty-foot tall walls that are constantly patrolled, as if it is a war zone,” says Watters. “If you get a chance to visit, you can walk down the beach from San Diego, or up from Tijuana, and you'll see a wall rising up in front of you on the continuous coastline. It's the most unnatural thing. Whoever built that wall must have lost their childlike mind.”

LISTEN TO “LISTEN TO THE WIND: HERE

LISTEN TO “SADNESS”: HERE

“This EP is about living in Los Angeles. The dirt and grime and fire and smoke and the perfect light in all of it. After living here now for 20 years, I finally felt like I could make a record about it. It still has the deserts of Arizona and the cities and jungles of Mexico around the edges, but at its heart, it's about Los Angeles,” says Watters.

Watters found an incredible creative partner in hi-res records to help bring his vision to life. The label’s focus is on high-quality productions.

NASHVILLE INDIE POP SINGER/SONGWRITER MANDI MAPES BREEZY WHIMSICAL SINGLE “SURELY GOODNESS” OUT TODAY

“SURELY GOODNESS”

LISTEN

NASHVILLE, TENN. - Today, Nashville indie folk/pop singer-songwriter Mandi Mapes has dropped the first single “Surely Goodness” from her forthcoming full-length debut Levees due March 10, 2023. It’s a breezy, whimsical tune that recalls to mind the goodness that is all around us, even in shadowy times of loneliness, grief and confusion.

“Surely goodness follows me around and around and around…” Mapes sings in playful affirmation, aided by producer Lucas Morton’s backing vocals. Fingerpicked guitar and uncluttered piano and violin arrangements make room for Mapes’ voice and preternatural sense of melody Mapes’ piano hooks are stunning, like gentle waltzes. There’s a sweetness to this track, one that reminds us that hope takes courage.

“I think so many of us are struggling right now, post the pandemic, with depression and anxiety and I just wanted to write a song that reminded all of us that even in the darkness, there is light breaking through,” says Mapes. “Even in our loneliness, love is reaching out. And even though the news headlines leave us feeling hopeless, goodness is not so far away.”

“Surely Goodness” is out everywhere now. A second single, “Daffodil Fields” will follow January 13, 2023, prior to the release of  Levees on March 10, 2023.

ABOUT MADI MAPES

Upon hearing Mandi Mapes' dulcet voice and imaginative songwriting, it's no surprise to find she was born in the music-rich culture of New Orleans. Similar to the city she grew up in, her music carries both the honest feelings about life's hurricanes and the resilient hope of brighter days ahead. Mandi lived in the Middle East with her husband for three years where she pressed pause on making music. During that season she experienced loss, loneliness and a crushing creative drought. But it was during that very season that deep beneath the ground, something beautiful was to come. Birthed from that barren soil, Mandi's upcoming album, Levees blooms with mellifluous melodies and poetic lyrics.

Mandi's music has been well received across the globe. Two of her songs are featured on the Turkish Spotify Playlist, Sabah Kahvesi (which means Morning Coffee in Turkish). You can hear her song, “Dance With Me” in the romance film, Coffee Shop, now streaming on Netflix. Also, her music has been featured in the Erwin Brothers' films, October Baby and Mom's Night Out. Mandi has over 21,000 monthly listeners and over 6,000 followers on Spotify.

The seven tracks of Algorithmia are an exploration of our digital dystopia, our addiction to our electronic devices, and our constant need for external validation in the form of likes and follows. The EP begins with the tongue-in-cheek “Artist’s Prayer,” as he solemnly sings, “I am an artist and I want to be seen/Bearing my soul on Instagram/I am a singer and I want to be streamed/Trusting my soul to an algorithm.”

The title track is a progressive grunge rock tune that explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly making our choices for us as listeners. Its accompanying video, directed by experimental artist Nate Dorr using AI generative art-making techniques, has made the rounds in the international festival circuit this year, winning Most Original Music Video at the Grand Rapids Film Festival, Best Experimental Video at the Prague Music Video Awards, Best Music Video at the 7th Music Film Festival, and nominated for Best Music Video in Glasgow’s HB Film Festival.

“Every Day Is The Same” (or “E.D.I.T.S.”), which features artist Dima Drjuchin, was the second single from the  EP. The song's mind-melting video was animated by Drjuchin, best known for painting the revered album art for Father John Misty's Fear Fun and collaborations with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. The song has an unforgettable zombie-like hook and anesthetized vibe that mimics the dopamine-havoc of internet addiction.

The EP’s latest single, a bop in disguise called “Addicted To My Phone,” is about internet addiction and our unnatural attachments to our devices. While the song is lyrically simple, the theme cuts deeply. The song’s unsettling, mind-blowing stop motion video is meant to make us uncomfortable, as the imagery swirls and repeats, its disturbing truth that we are losing ourselves is on full display. Today, he released a new stop motion video, created in conjunction with Omer Gal, for EP track “Fortunate Man.” The song takes a different direction than the others on  Algorithmia, turning its gaze from technology to the dubiously comfortable and happily-fed people who use it.

Best known for his unforgettable high-tenor voice, dense clouds of harmonies, and maximalist production, BenBen’s aesthetic could be described as if Soundgarden and Radiohead collaborated earnestly with Michael Jackson on a deeply heartfelt concept album about My Little Pony.

His first band, Arizona, was a mid-00s underground indie darling, touring with artists as diverse as Band of Horses and The Indigo Girls. With his last band, New Beard, BenBen worked with legendary Swedish psychedelic-rock genius Gustav Ejstes of Dungen. After contributing vocals to a number of her albums, he also co-wrote the single “Garden Dove” with indie-folk goddess Samantha Crain for her beloved 2020 album A Small Death.

After a hiatus spent learning documentary filmmaking and traditional frame-by-frame animation techniques, BenBen is back with a series of freshly-crafted releases that are dense with beautiful arrangements, infectious melodies, and a golden heartbeat of unusually sincere magic. In addition to this new material, he collaborated with award-winning filmmaker Samantha Aldana as a composer for a series of short films and has forged relationships with other artists and filmmakers co-creating videos that are already storming the festival circuit. BenBen is also the producer and bass player for up-and-coming indie pop phenom Questa Music, whose first single “Feedin” hit the masses with a recent placement on M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV hit “Servant.”

As a shy, kind-of anxious, extroverted introvert, BenBen seeks to create art that feels like a personalized invitation to a welcoming otherworld - an indie rock wonderland for sensitive souls who seek beauty in the small, overlooked things and places…or anyone who still enjoys taking the time to sit down, close their eyes, and dwell in a world of pure imagination (for a little while).

LISTEN: ON THE OTHER SIDE

Today, San Francisco-based rock outfit The Stone Foxes have released their blistering new LP, On The Other Side. “My brother and I created this album to be a cinematic western rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack to accompany you when the journey gets rough,” says Shannon Koehler, who co-founded the band with his brother, Spence. “We’re all trying to get through our own things in a big beautiful broken world, trying to reach greener grass, while holding on to the people we love.”

The band, known for their bone-shaking blues-infused rock, expanded their sonic horizons with On The Other Side, adding a cinematic horn section to their signature style. “Spence and I both grew up loving western movies and soundtracks, especially the stuff by Ennio Morricone, with the horses and spurs and all that beautiful noise,” Shannon recalls. “The goal was to marry those western sounds with our first love of rock ‘n’ roll, but do it with simpler and tighter grooves. Like if Ennio Morricone and T. Rex had a more modern-looking baby, that was the mindset.”

Though recorded in various locations - The Complex in San Francisco, New & Improved Recording, and in bedrooms and living rooms across the Bay Area - On The Other Side is a seamless blend of searing riffs, thundering beats, and dramatic horns.

On The Other Side reflects the brothers’ struggles with anxiety, being grounded by love, and the experience of living in a deeply disturbing America. Themes of heartbreak are also present – in the figurative and literal sense. In the summer of 2020, Shannon, who suffers from congenital heart issues, had to undergo his second open-heart surgery (and his 14th heart-related surgery). Their song “Help Me Now” was written about the experience; the album’s art depicts the outline of a man with a scar running down his chest, a painting done by a family friend inspired by a post-surgery photo of Shannon.

Lead single “Man’s Red Fire,” named after a lyric from The Jungle Book's “I Want To Be Like You,” is about being surrounded by the seemingly ever-present California wildfires, as well as the raging fire of pervasive racism in the United States. The band also released “Time Is A Killer,” a song about climate change that characterizes Mother Nature as a stone-cold killer. The music video depicts Time as a blindfolded, sword-wielding, femme fatale.

WATCH: “TIME IS A KILLER”

On The Other Side is the first full-length album recorded by Shannon (lead vocals, drums, harmonica,  producer) and Spence (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, pedal steel, bass, producer) in over six years.  It's also an album of many firsts. "It’s the first time Spence and I have been the main songwriters on every track of a release," says Shannon. "It’s the first time I’ve sung lead vocals on every track of a release. It’s the first time I’ve ever written songs on piano that turned into actual songs on an album. It’s the first time Spence has been the main bass player on a full album."

The Stone Foxes will celebrate the album’s release with a show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall on Friday, November 18th. Click HERE for show information. In keeping with the band’s hunger-fighting initiative, The Goodnight Moon Project, attendees can bring a healthy, non-perishable food item to the show and receive a free piece of merch in return. The food collected will be donated to the SF-Marin Food Bank. Be sure to follow The Stone Foxes via the links below for the latest news and updates.

MELISSA CARPER’S NEW LP RAMBLIN’ SOUL OUT TODAY VIA MAE MUSIC/THIRTY TIGERS

“Carper’s heavily twangy vocal tone is different from Billie Holiday’s, but it’s similarly distinctive, and very much a signature of her sound." - Austin American-Statesman

"Carper is hands-down one of the best in the trad music game." - The Boot

"Carper has found her true voice and place in the music world, and with a sound many country and roots music fans are thirsty for." - Saving Country Music

"Ramblin’ Soul replicates the effortless cool from Daddy’s Country Gold. Carper’s relentless creativity spins our grandparents’ music into something immediate and familiar." - No Depression

"…her music wrangles sounds of a different era – country jazz, honky-tonk, and a bluesy soul unfurling with the thick twang of her vocals... Most spectacular though is the emotional twinge that wrings from the soulful shuffle of songs like 'Ain't a Day Goes By'" - The Austin Chronicle

"Ah, yes, that old feel. It's what makes Carper's music such a joy." - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Hot damn, Melissa Carper has done it again” - The Arkansas Times

“Carper’s voice acts as an enveloping history lesson in American music, pulling from all the greats of bygone eras to create a vibe that’s as comforting as it is fresh.” - Glide Magazine

“...an Ozark Billie Holiday” - WMOT

“It ain’t old, it ain’t retro, it’s just real.” - Country Music People

"...there isn't an undeveloped or thoughtless tune on the entire body of work...a technically sound, creatively distinctive album that authentically encompasses Carper's eclectic foundation and Americana as a whole." - The Amp

“It’s retro and relevant all at the same time, giving Carper solid standing as an essential artist." - Holler.

"Melissa Carper is the real deal" - Basic Folk

"As she says in closing tune, ‘Hanging on to You’ “They don’t make them like they used to” Thankfully Melissa Carper does." - Americana-UK

"Sepia-toned and smoky, Carper is front and center, as emotional as Hank Williams and as enthralling as Billie Holiday. Few artists transition as well from the side of the stage to the center, but Melissa Carper performs at another level entirely." - Sound and Soul

"Melissa Carper seeks to reclaim what made Country music great before it went all pop. And she just might do it." - Tuned Up

“...gentle western swing and soulful tones of hope” - Country Queer

"...an artist who can croon, swoon, sashay and strut with the best" - The Rocking Magpie

LISTEN: RAMBLIN’ SOUL

Today, critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter and upright bassist Melissa Carper has released her new LP, Ramblin’ Soul, via Mae Music/Thirty Tigers. In 2020, grappling with the loss of regular gigs, Carper and her partner, award-winning fiddler Rebecca Patek, moved to a friend’s farm near Austin, working in exchange for housing, organic vegetables, and fresh, country air. The simpler life afforded Carper the space and rejuvenation needed to channel her muse and begin writing for her next album.

"Ramblin' Soul was inspired by the new appreciation I had for the freedom to travel around the country and perform," explains the Austin-based lifelong wanderer. Carper was relieved and energized to be back on the road, on a familiar pilgrimage from Texas to Arkansas and back to meet and collaborate with musician friends. "I had taken for granted the ability to interact with audiences and friends and how much it feeds my soul and my creative process," she adds.  Feeling inspired by time on the road and time with other creative minds, she penned the title track on the way back home, and the Ramblin' Soul seeds were planted.

From its conception and throughout the recording process, the album seemed to take on a life of its own. “Thematically, I had a handful of songs about rambling around and living a free life that I wanted to weave through the album,” she recalls. “I also knew I wanted Ramblin' Soul to have a different feel than my previous release, Daddy's Country Gold, with more upbeat and diverse styles and grooves.” Ramblin’ Soul features 10 Carper originals--venturing into her blues, early rock 'n roll, and soul influences, blended with her signature flavors of country, western swing, and jazz. The album also boasts a co-write with friend and collaborator Gina Gallina (who also animated Carper’s video for album track “1980 Dodge Van”), a song penned by friend and frequent collaborator Brennen Leigh, and a reimagined classic from folk n’ soul pioneer Odetta. There is something for everyone on Ramblin' Soul.

"The album freely explores many different styles of Americana music," she explains. "It was really incredible and so much fun to hear the songs develop in the studio with a stellar group of musicians and producers all sharing their ideas and bringing each song to life."  Carper knew she wanted to work again with Andrija Tokic (The Bomb Shelter) and Dennis Crouch (Time Jumpers) to co-produce and the same incredible crew of musicians that contributed their immense talents to Daddy's Country Gold, along with some new additions to the roster. Some of Nashville's finest session and touring artists appear on the lineup, including Crouch (bass), Chris Scruggs (guitars and steel), John Pahmer (organ and piano), Matty Meyer (drums), Billy Contreras (fiddle), Rory Hoffman (clarinet, piano, nylon-string guitar), Wes Langlois (guitar), Sierra Ferrell and Larry Marrs (George Jones) on harmony vocals, and a backing vocal trio of Kyshona Armstrong, Maureen Murphy, and Nickie Conley.  "They seriously knocked it out of the park," Carper says.  "It was truly a group effort.  I was blown away by everyone involved and the resulting soulful and joyful energy of the album.  I am excited to get Ramblin' Soul out into the world and hope people enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it."

The album is available for purchase and streaming on all platforms HERE. Melissa Carper is currently celebrating the album release with shows in Austin, Nashville, Little Rock, New Orleans, and more, and will embark on a West Coast tour in early 2023. OUT TODAY: BUFFALO ROSE RELEASES NEW LP AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN VIA MISRA RECORDS

LISTEN: AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN

Today, Pittsburgh-based, award-winning, acoustic collective Buffalo Rose has released their new LP Again, Again, Again via Misra Records. The band chose the perfect name for this, their second full-length album, as listeners will have its 11 sparkling gems on repeat.

Pure, crystalline vocal harmonies soar stratospherically through the album, cascading over sparkling beds of mandolin, guitar, dobro, and bass. Vocalists Lucy Clabby, Margot Jezerc, and Shane McLaughlin dwell in the notes in these songs, turning them in and out and capturing every nuance of phrasing. From gently swirling ballads like “Reason and Passion,” the ethereally soaring “Hallelujah Anyway,” and the Beatles-esque “Escape Artist,” to the operatic and stunningly gorgeous “New World” the tracks on Again, Again, Again reverberate in hearts and souls long after the last notes fade.

The album explores the lows of late-night loneliness, offers satirical takes on 21st-century culture and politics, and poignantly explores the wonders and pitfalls of love in the modern world. Each track brims with beauty in its harmonic blend of voices and strings.

Buffalo Rose takes the singer-songwriter tradition to a new level with their emotive, unique, and meticulously arranged songs inspired by a world of distinctive influences that never let a dull or predictable moment creep in.

They use powerful vocal harmonies, strong playing, and an original vision to operate at every possible emotional level, delivering dynamic live shows that are unforgettable experiences.

This combination of artistry and enthusiasm makes Buffalo Rose one of the most vital and important groups working today. THE BIRD AND THE BEE:

THE BOOK // THE SONG OF THE BIRD AND THE BEE + VIDEO

Founder and CEO of the Los Angeles based music company The Penthouse, Jonnie Forster is excited to add the title of author to his resume with the release of the beautiful children’s book The Bird and The Bee out today via Simon & Schuster. The book is accompanied by the release of  “The Song of The Bird and The Bee '' written and performed by multi-platinum-selling songwriter M’Jesti available today on all major streaming platforms. The book tells the story of two creatures from very different backgrounds,  Herbie the Hummingbird and Bree Princess Bee as they join forces to help save the forest. Along the way, they meet a colorful trove of beautifully illustrated characters, brought to life by Ukrainian artist and refugee Yuliia Danchuk, and learn lessons of love and acceptance. According to Herbie the Humming Bird  “if progress must start somewhere why not with Herbie and Bree."

Forster’s initial inspiration for the book came from his wedding, an event that brought together   a colorful cast of characters from all different walks of life, to celebrate love and the union of two people from very different backgrounds. Forster was raised Jewish and is from  New York,  and his wife, Kamilah, is part Native American and African American.  Basking in the glow of the wedding, Forster was at Lake Tahoe where observed a hummingbird feeding on a flower, next to a group of bees. He started to contemplate how incredible it was that these two very different creatures could not only co-exist but were enjoying nature together in harmony. Forster started to develop a story about a long nose hummingbird (him) who falls for the future Queen of the hive (Kamilah).  After the birth of their daughter Ivy, and during the height of the pandemic, in the midst of cultural divisiveness and political tensions,  Forster thought it was time to put pen to paper. This was a story his daughter, and the world at large was in need of.

Forster knew he had a good story but would need to partner with an incredible illustrator to bring breathe life into the characters he created. After scouring the internet and sifting through thousands of potential creators, he found Yuliia Danchuk, an unknown and unpublished Ukrainian illustrator. Forster, also of Ukrainian lineage, was immediately drawn to her talent and expressed sympathy for the volatile state she was in. With no formal training, and despite living within a warzone,  Danchuk connected with the story on many levels and was able to beautifully interpret the characters. “This project was the largest book I have drawn,” said Danchuk. “I was terribly afraid that I wouldn't be able to cope, I'm still self-taught without an education,  but I wanted to test myself, I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it, no matter what. Thanks to this project, I gained confidence in my strengths and abilities. This project prevented me from falling into a deep depression, it became my hiding place from everything, a place where my psyche could rest.” In addition to the impact, the work had on her mental state, with the payment she received from the project she was able to flee the war and relocate to the Czech Republic where she and her brother currently reside.

Since Forster’s world is music it was going to be a part of this project, and he took it upon himself to share the project with his network of musicians and songwriters, which found its way to  BMI award recipient, multi-platinum selling, Icon Honoree M’Jestie.  In her early 20s, M'Jestie began writing songs for Bad Boy and Roc-A-Fella Records and by the age of 26 had sold more than 2 Million albums, notably penning Rihanna’s very first global hit “Pon De Replay.” After that career-making opportunity, M’Jestie walked away from the music industry to start her Dream Little Dreamer music school for children. M’Jestie  was so taken by the story that she came out of retirement from songwriting to write songs inspired by the book starting with the theme song “The Song of The Bird and the Bee.”   "Honestly, I was amazed by the artwork. It helped me to draw inspiration for the music. When Johnnie asked me to be a part of the project, it was just a magical moment. The song and music naturally came together. There is nothing more true than the bird and the bee." Coming soon, just in time for the Holidays is a Bird and the Bee Holiday song from M’Jestie and the launch of an exclusive line of  luxury wallpaper with Evolve Textiles

LOS ANGELES BASED SINGER-SONGWRITER TEDDY GROSSMAN’S EAST COAST TOUR

SUPPORTING VAN MORRISON IN BOSTON + SOLO SHOWS

INCLUDING  A HOMETOWN SHOW IN PHILADELPHIA

"Grossman’s lyrics tread the classic territory of a failed love affair, while his vocals cast the track in the bruised cries and irresistible melodies of Otis Redding or Bill Withers.

-Under the Radar

“It’s lushly orchestrated, adorned with strings, horns, organ, slide guitar and backing vocals. Not unlike contemporary soul men such as Curtis Harding, Benjamin Booker, Nathaniel Rateliff and Anderson East, Grossman does right by his R&B and folk heroes.”

-Buzzbands LA

“With its lyrics about opening up to someone and letting the walls come down in order to give love and receive love, the song has a throwback soul sound that is sunny and hopeful. Drawing on the 60s and 70s R&B and soul music, the song carries a deep groove and sensuality. It’s also a wonderful showcase for Grossman’s silky smooth vocals."

 -Glide Magazine

“Sometimes we still reach our destination even when our path veers off course. For singer-songwriter Teddy Grossman, that meant a much longer journey into seeing his dream of a debut solo album realized.”

-Americana Highways

His lyrics are both relatable and personal, and his story, even at its beginnings, is worth hearing. “

-SongFacts

“The L.A.-based singer/songwriter creates soulful music with melodies that linger in listeners’ minds. “

-American Songwriter

“Teddy Grossman …...takes inspiration from the heartland folk feel of Neil Young’s Harvest for an intimate look at Grossman’s joy in finally feeling settled after a cross-country move.”

-UPROXX

 Listen to Soon Come: HERE

Los Angeles by way of Philadelphia singer-songwriter Teddy Grossman is thrilled to be returning home to the East Coast for solo shows in New York City and Philadelphia, before heading on to Boston to support Van Morrison for two nights at the Shubert Theatre. This east run follows up a West Coast tour where Grossman supported the War & Treaty, and sold-out shows in the UK where Grossman supported the legendary Mavis Staples.

Although a lifelong music lover & maker, pursuing a career in music was put on the back burner. After a decade of his own music playing second fiddle to the life of a traveling salesman, Grossman picked up everything and moved to Los Angeles, where he soon began recording what would become, Soon Come, leaving behind his job and former life along the way.  The ever-soulful singer-songwriter emotes like a man who has been down many paths, only to arrive back definitively where he’s forever belonged. “I need to be able to look back at my life and say I gave it a real go.”  This steady perseverance, this take-no-prisoners passion of Grossman’s— it all goes a long way in explaining why the multi-talented artist has finally arrived at this moment, his moment, which comes pouring forth via his cerebral and sublimely centered songs— the sort that speak to years of hard-won wisdom and, well, maybe a bit of luck.

With the reaction to Grossman’s  initial single offerings from the album, it looks like that  combo of luck and wisdom has come full circle.  “I had this impossible aim of following Music From Big Pink and Voodoo as the north star of this record,” Grossman explains. Part gospel and blues and rock and folk and Appalachia and soul and R&B his early singles won over fans and media alike Golden State called single “Out Of Thin Air,” “a warm glass of rye whiskey cupped in your hand while you digest your meal and watch the Lions lose another game.”  Soultracks said “‘Ready,” “showcases an artist who is more than ready to make his mark in the music world,”   and Under the Radar compared “Giving Up” to the classic soul of Bill Withers and Otis Redding, saying that the song “sports a universal pop appeal, with gospel backing vocals and a standout climactic sax solo, bringing the track to a sing-along fever pitch." The first few singles have garnered over 1 million streams and have featured on Spotify playlists such  Mellow Morning, Retro Soul, and Morning Commute, and  Apple Music playlists’  Acoustic Chill, Long Walk, Smooth Easy, Breaking R&B and New in R&B, seeing him right alongside artists like Leon Bridges, Yola, Lee Fields, Zella Day Brandi Carlile etc.

Accompanying these stunners are some of Grossman’s most story rich songs, which were saved for the album including, “Crowned,”  a song that sprang forth from an unlikely friendship with the iconic singer-songwriter Bill Withers near the end of the legend’s life. After a chance meeting one night, in 2018, at a small Bill Withers tribute concert in Los Angeles, Grossman and longtime musical collaborator and drummer, Josh Teitelbaum, wound up going over to Withers’ house for a few inspired hangs. The song recounts Bill’s incredible life, referencing a phrase Withers kept saying as he’d run his fingers through his full head of hair during their time together - “I’m Crowned in Glory.” “Why Should I Pretend?,” probably the most personal and poignant song on the album, was first written by Grossman’s grandfather Buddy back in the 1930’s. It was recorded later that decade by jazz icon Louis Prima & his New Orleans Gang. Grossman even plays his childhood instrument, the trumpet on the song, as a tribute to his late grandfather.
“For a long time in my life, I felt this low-grade hum in the background that I wasn’t really where I was supposed to be,”says Grossman. Soon Come, then, he says, “is ultimately a record about hope, and a deep knowing that we’re gonna get there… all in good time.”

SOUTH AFRICAN ROCKER STEVE LOUW RELEASES NEW ALBUM THUNDER AND RAIN

FEATURING JOE BONAMASSA, AND DOUG LANCIO PRODUCED BY KEVIN SHIRLEY

“I'll Be Back”

VIDEO |

Thunder And Rain Album

ALBUM STREAM/PURCHASE

Cape Town, South Africa - Today, sees the release of Steve Louw’s latest album, Thunder and Rain and the video for, “I’ll Be Back”, the third single lifted from this powerful 10-track, Kevin Shirley-produced album.

The interplay on Thunder and Rain is often subtle, yet it’s undeniably soulful, the songs benefiting from the easy turns of phrases and chord changes. Steve conveys these emotions through strength on “I’ll Be Back”, a song where acoustic guitars give the track a steady, windblown propulsion, one that muscles through on the chorus – he’s a man on a mission, one dedicated to the task at hand.

As with 2021’s Headlight Dreams album, 2022’s Thunder and Rain, besides Steve and Joe, is flush with talent. From Greg Morrow on drums, Rob McNelley on guitar and Slide Dobro, Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Kenny Greenburg on guitar, Alison Prestwood on bass guitar and Kevin McKendree on keyboards, amongst others, Thunder and Rain is as impressive in lyrics and compositions as it is in heavyweight genii, all adding multiple layers of arresting accompaniment.

ABOUT STEVE LOUW: South African musician Steve Louw’s career began with his first band All Night Radio who released two records including 1986's The Killing Floor, the album where he first collaborated with Kevin Shirley. Louw came to stardom as the leader of Big Sky, a group who put out their first album, Waiting for the Dawn, in 1990. During their time together, Big Sky released five albums, a discography highlighted by 1995's acclaimed Horizon. The band earned accolades from the industry, including winning the FNB Music Award for Best SA Rock Act in 1996. At the end of their run as a band, Big Sky was the opening act for Rodriguez on his valedictory tour of South Africa, a journey captured in the 2012 Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The tour raised Louw's international profile, leading to his collaboration with Queen's Brian May and Eurythmics' Dave Stewart on "Amandla," a song on 2003's Nelson Mandela-inspired AIDS awareness project 46664.

Following the release of Big Sky’s Trancas Canyon in 2008, Louw retreated from the spotlight. He broke his silence with his solo debut Headlight Dreams, a rousing comeback delivered in 2021. Thunder and Rain, his sophomore release, will be available November 11, 2022.

OUT TODAY: MARK ERELLI’S NEW SINGLE “YOU” & LIVE PERFORMANCE VIDEO FILMED AT CLUB PASSIM

LAY YOUR DARKNESS DOWN LP OUT FEBRUARY 3

VIA SOUNDLY MUSIC

LISTEN // WATCH: “YOU”

Critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Mark Erelli has released “You,” one of the rawest, most emotional tracks from his forthcoming LP, Lay Your Darkness Down, due out on February 3rd via Soundly Music. “This is a wrecking ball of a love song,” Erelli explains. “It’s a cry for help, directed at a partner who is also struggling and may not be feeling strong enough to be supportive. There is real desperation here, an honest need to be reminded of the redemptive power of love, especially at one’s lowest moment.”

Erelli also recorded a stripped-down performance of “You” at Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “I wanted to capture this in one of the rooms that’s most meaningful to me,’ he says of Passim. “At its essence, the song explores the need to be fully seen by the ones that we love, and it felt fitting to play it in a space where I always feel I can be at my most vulnerable and honest with my audience.”

“You” also serves as a mission statement, a reaffirmation of the commitment to walking together through the darkness together and emerging stronger on the other side. Its release follows the soulfully sultry “The Man I Am,” a tribute to Polly, his wife of 20 years, and lead single “You’re Gonna Wanna Remember This,” an epic track he co-wrote with his “musical big sister,” GRAMMY-winning artist Lori McKenna.

In the summer of 2020, Erelli was performing an outdoor show in New Hampshire when something strange happened. “I looked down and couldn’t see my fingers on the guitar,” he recently told The Boston Globe. “I’m literally about to go into the downbeat for the solo, and, as you can imagine, it didn’t go great. It was embarrassing. I came offstage thinking, ‘Note to self: Check the lighting next time.’” Later, when driving home one night through a Boston tunnel, he lost sight of the road. After a trip to the ophthalmologist, Erelli was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa ("RP"), a degenerative eye disease that causes progressive loss of night and peripheral vision, and can lead to complete blindness.

“ADDICTED TO MY PHONE” - NEW SINGLE & VIDEO FROM BENBEN OUT NOW

SOLO DEBUT EP ALGORITHMIA EP OUT NOVEMBER 18

VIA GIFTSHOP RECORDS

LISTEN // WATCH: “ADDICTED TO MY PHONE”

Brooklyn-based animator, producer, and self-described “gnome rocker” Ben Wigler, who makes music under his experimental art-rock project moniker BenBen, has unveiled his latest track, “Addicted To My Phone,” along with its deliciously disturbing stop motion video.

“Addicted To My Phone” is the third single from BenBen's solo debut, a seven-song EP Algorithmia. The EP is a disgruntled rainbow rock extravaganza about weeping into the cyber-void of digital culture. “Addicted To My Phone” is about internet addiction and our unnatural attachments to our devices. While the song is lyrically simple, the theme cuts deeply. The song’s mind-blowing video is meant to make us uncomfortable, as the imagery swirls and repeats, its disturbing truth that we are losing ourselves is on full display.

“Addicted To My Phone” follows “Every Day Is The Same” or (“E.D.I.T.S.”) and its mind-melting video, animated by artist and musician Dima Drjuchin. He is best known for painting the revered album art for Father John Misty's Fear Fun and for his collaborations with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. The song itself rocks super hard but has an unforgettable zombie-like hook and anesthetized vibe that mimics the dopamine-havoc of internet addiction.

“E.D.I.T.S.” follows the EP’s first single, title track “Algorithmia,” along with its award-winning AI-generated video. The song's angular riffs and soaring vocals sound like Soundgarden and Queen had a musical baby and then fed it, squealing, directly into the gaping maw of the internet. The video was directed by experimental artist Nate Dorr using AI generative art-making techniques, as the song speaks to how we are increasingly allowing algorithms to make our choices.

LISTEN // WATCH: “EVERY DAY IS THE SAME (ft. DIMA DRJUCHIN)”

LISTEN // WATCH: “ALGORITHMIA”

The “Algorithmia” video premiered in Denver at the Supernova Digital Animation Festival (September 2022), winning “Most Original Music Video” at the Grand Rapids Film Festival (September 2022), was a part of the Boundless Film Festival (October 2022) in London and the HB Film Festival (October 2022) in Glasgow, where it was nominated for Best Music Video.

Wigler helped pioneer 21st-century indie rock with under-the-radar bands Arizona and New Beard, performing live and in the studio with artists like Band of Horses, Samantha Crain, and Indigo Girls. Wigler’s last LP was mixed by legendary Dungen frontman Gustav Ejstes. Best known for an unforgettable high tenor voice and infectious melodies, BenBen crafts riff-driven music with a golden heartbeat–living creatures and invitations to adventure in other worlds.

CANADIAN SINGER/SONGWRITER ALAN DOYLE RETURNS TO THE U.S. ON TOUR IN EARLY 2023 HERE, TONIGHT (LIVE) ALBUM OUT NOW

HERE, TONIGHT (LIVE) || LISTEN

ST JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND. - Alan Doyle, Canadian national treasure and unofficial ambassador of Newfoundland's rich musical traditions, returns to the U.S. in 2023 to support his first live album Here, Tonight (Live). Tickets are currently on sale for all shows.

On the heels of his 2020 album release Rough Side Out, Alan was in the midst of a Canadian national tour when COVID halted the live music industry across the world. “We came home from tour on March 9, and we never left,” Doyle told the San Francisco Examiner in an interview.

Looking for something comforting in a year that had everyone out of sorts, Doyle went back to his roots to rediscover his love of folk music, especially the traditional songs from his native Newfoundland.

The result was Back to the Harbour (2021), “a 6-song EP that maintains his quality consistently with an energetic fusion that carries over to his own personal efforts. Songs that are a part of his language.” – Americana Highways

With a return to the road in 2022, it seemed fitting that Alan release his first live album Here, Tonight (Live) in anticipation of the tour. A collection of songs recorded at shows over the past few years with his longtime tour support The Beautiful Beautiful Band (Cory Tetford, Kendel Carson, Kris MacFarlane, Shehab Illyas and Todd Lumley).
Here, Tonight includes songs from Doyle’s solo albums: Boy on Bridge (2012), So Let’s Go (2014), A Week at the Warehouse (2017), and his 2020 chart-topping release Rough Side Out; as well as classic Great Big Sea favourites including “Ordinary Day” and “When I’m Up.”

“…his voice is Guinness-thick, and as warm as a Canadian kitchen, where Newfoundlanders traditionally gathered in the winter for family singalongs.” – San Francisco Examiner

Alan Doyle will continue to tour in 2023 with his 6-piece band and special guest Chris Trapper. For tickets and full list of dates, visit https://alandoyle.ca/tour/

ABOUT ALAN DOYLE: Alan Doyle – the songwriter, producer, actor and author – is a 12-time JUNO Award nominee for his solo material and work with his iconic band Great Big Sea. In 2018, he was awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions to the musical traditions of Newfoundland and for his commitment to numerous charitable initiatives. His most recent book, All Together Now: A Newfoundlander's Light Tales for Heavy Times, was released in November 2020 and quickly became his third national bestseller.

AMBIENT-FOLK ARTIST AARKTICA RELEASES A STUNNING HOLIDAY COVER OF JOHN PRINE’S “CHRISTMAS IN PRISON”

"Evocative ambience and electronica." - Penny Black Music

"Aarktica has long been a reliable name for those interested in the more otherworldly and transporting side of the guitar.”- Dusted Magazine

"Under the guise of Aarktica, you never know where Jon DeRosa is going to end up." - Exclaim

"Why isn’t Jon DeRosa’s work as Aarktica mentioned in the same breath as Stars of the Lid or Eluvium when discussing ambient/drone music? Ever since losing hearing in his right ear in 1999, DeRosa has succeeded in using the drifting guitar tones of Aarktica to conjure up the underwater experience that hearing music has become for him.” - Pop Matters

LISTEN TO CHRISTMAS IN PRISON: HERE

Ambient shoegaze-folk artist Aarktica has released his cover of John Prine’s “Christmas In Prison,” a wintery homage to mark the changing of the season. Aarktica’s Jon DeRosa crafts comforting sonic terrains for listeners to traverse across through his reverb-soaked guitar, melding his own unique style of glowing shoegaze-ambient with Prine's quintessential American folk songwriting. Delicate guitar tones glisten in the foreground before unleashing a wall of sound throughout the chorus, further underscored by soaring vocal harmonies with help from Mascot's Kendall Jane Meade. DeRosa's guitar is joined by a steady beat and sleigh bells provided by renowned drummer Butch Norton (of Lucinda Williams' band), whose playing fully immerses "Christmas in Prison" into the wintery soundscapes conjured through both Prine and DeRosa. For DeRosa, the magic of John Prine is not only in his masterful songwriting, but also in his ability to empathize with the characters he writes and sings about. "I can't think of another songwriter with both his level of sensitivity as well as lyrical strength."

"When I heard "Christmas in Prison" with its lilting waltz rhythm, beautiful vocal melody and lyrics that were sad, sentimental and funny all at once, I knew it was the one," says DeRosa. "The imagery Prine conjures up in the lyrics is also so vivid and poetic. Prine once said about the song, "It’s about a person being somewhere like a prison, in a situation they don’t want to be in. And wishing they were somewhere else."

On September 30th Aarktica released his tenth album We Will Find The Light via Darla Records. We Will Find the Light is Aarktica's most ambitious and sublime album to date, and marks his first collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Lewis Pesacov. The album is available on all streaming services, as a CD digipack, and as a limited edition double vinyl gatefold, available here. This is the first physical release from Aarktica since 2009's In Sea and the first full-length since 2019's Mareación.

Beginning with the ambient guitar opus No Solace in Sleep (Silber) in 2000, the classically trained DeRosa has spent the last two decades charting his way across cosmic terrains and ambient soundscapes through patient songwriting and a curiosity in experimentation. It's a journey that began with DeRosa recording guitar experiments on a four-track cassette recorder in his college dorm after going permanently deaf in his right ear. "I was having aural hallucinations,” says DeRosa.

“Everything I knew as sonically 'normal' suddenly changed. When I started Aarktica, it was a bit like a sonic journal, trying to recreate and reinterpret sounds as I was hearing them." These recordings, which would become No Solace in Sleep, translated those classical musical forms he’d studied for years to electric guitar, stretched them into infinity, soaked them in reverb and delay, and created an entirely new sound identity that would evolve over the years.

Leading into the writing of We Will Find the Light, DeRosa hadn’t felt inspired to write music for several years. “I had been telling myself, ‘I have nothing to say,’” he says, “but after a certain amount of time, and trying everything I knew to break through, it began to feel like perhaps I was just done, nothing left in the tank.” To get to answers on whether his drive for making music was really in his heart, or because he was trying to chase some made-up idea of success, DeRosa who is a Somatic healer held a private ceremony for himself on New Years Eve and sat alone with the feelings of emotional and spiritual blockage. What began to bubble up was uncomfortable and unpleasant. Through this process DeRosa had a realization that with all the music he made in the past none of it was truly personal. He had always created characters and personas, and had only written about personal experience from an arms length. To move forward, he was going to have to approach writing from a truly authentic place. “Eventually I picked up a guitar and started playing” says DeRosa, “and that marked the beginning of how this album came to be. Something truly shifted. All the songs with the exception of the covers were written in a matter of a few months after this.”

STREAM/BUY: We Will Find The Light LP

The album, which is essentially about healing, beautifully traverses through the canyons between ambient and folk genres. With gentle acoustic plucking, haunting string arrangements, and subtle, comforting electronic atmospheres, the eleven songs that make up We Will Find the Light, showcase Aarktica’s prowess in bridging all sides of his sonic spectrum, moving seamlessly through both melancholia and optimism, setting the scene for nuanced emotions to pollinate.

“The album is about this idea that once we acknowledge certain wounds, weaknesses or unpleasant feelings, and instead of ignoring them,” say Derosa “we dive headfirst into the darkness and face everything that is terrifying, there’s at least the possibility (and more so, the likelihood) that we will come out on the other end feeling stronger and more empowered.”

Praise for We Will Find the Light

"A beautiful and dynamic ride between ambient electric symphony and intimate human song."

- Alan Sparhawk, Low.

"We Will Find the Light is a gigantic double album that feels like a rebirth." - Rosy Overdrive

“The artist holds nothing back in creating vast worlds of space and sonic exploration, but in each of those worlds is an open heart on full display. Achingly visceral and softly stirring, We Will Find the Light is the haunting and hopeful expression of a raw soul exposed.” - Atwood Magazine

“A lot of pop songs can heal heartbreak, but Aarktica goes deeper than that." - Two Story Melody

“For this new Aarktica record DeRosa explores ambient chamber pop and does a really beautiful job here.” - Daggerzine

SANTA BARBARA, CA – November 4, 2022 – Today, Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket) releases his fifth solo album There Is So Much Here on Compass Records.

In the six years since his last solo album Swallowed by the New (2016), Phillips has navigated grief in his post-divorce outing to finding love again reflected on There Is So Much Here. This new collection of songs documents a shift of perspective from dealing with loss to an appreciation of life.

“The son of a physicist, Glen Phillips has always been a cerebral singer-songwriter, and his new solo album is a thoughtful, tuneful collection of contemplations on life’s simple charms. There Is So Much Here considers the pleasure derived from a glass of water, the value of being OK with being just OK, and the elusive sweet spot between the past and future…While the album’s title sounds like a celebration, Phillips acknowledges how elusive contentment can be. “A new day is here,” he sings, somehow sounding wary. Smart guy.” - Associated Press

“...with his new LP, There Is So Much Here, Phillips takes the time to look for glimmers of hope, gratitude, and grace. These messages are delivered over the course of 11 thoughtful sparse ballads and heartland rockers. The up-tempo lead single “Big Changes” serves as a mission statement of sorts for the entire album, using the chorus to loosely address seeking a reprieve from the chaos of the current sociopolitical climate and an impassioned verse…” - No Depression

“...a reflective and rocking fruit of pandemic labor called There is So Much Here… the feel of an appreciation of life as it unfolds, in and out of catastrophic and affirmative events and emotional states, as conveyed on the Rufus Wainwright-esque pop ballad ‘Call the Moondust.’” - Santa Barbara Independent

“Phillips has pared his music down to its emotional core, concentrating on the simple truths of love and relationships, with a profound spiritual understanding.” -KPCW

Phillips is currently on tour in support of There Is So Much Here through the end of the year and into 2023. Confirmed dates below.

ABOUT GLEN PHILLIPS: During his years as lead singer and main songwriter of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Phillips helped to create the band’s elegant folk/pop sound with honest, introspective lyrics that forged a close bond with their fans. When Toad went on hiatus, he launched a solo career with Abulum, and stayed busy collaborating with other artists on various projects including Mutual Admiration Society, with members of Nickel Creek and Remote Tree Children, an experimental outing with John Morgan Askew.
