 Over the past four years, Juliana Hatfield has kept fans engaged and intrigued as she oscillates between impassioned original releases (Pussycat, Weird) and inspired covers collections (Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John, Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police). This year she returns with her latest album of originals, Blood, out May 14th on American Laundromat Records.

Her 19th solo studio album takes a deep dive into the dark side with a lens on modern human psychology and behaviour. “I think these songs are a reaction to how seriously and negatively a lot of people have been affected by the past four years,” says Juliana. “But it’s fun, musically. There’s a lot of playing around. I didn’t really have a plan when I started this project.”  

With the pandemic limiting studio safety and availability, Juliana took the opportunity to learn to record at her Massachusetts home with recent collaborator Jed Davis assisting from Connecticut. “Usually I work in a studio,” explains Juliana. “I did more than half the work in my room—with Jed helping me to troubleshoot the technology, and helping with building and arranging some of the songs--and then I finished up with additional overdubs and mixing with engineer James Bridges at Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA.” 

The first single, “Mouthful of Blood”, released today (1/28) is gritty and abrasive yet groovy and melodic. That duality is represented throughout Blood. It is eminently hummable and thought-provoking. Sophisticated but catchy. Challenging but danceable.

“I always love coming up with melodies and then trying to fit words into them—it’s like doing a puzzle,” says Juliana. “And I always find places to use the Mellotron flutes and strings, on every album, because those sounds are so beautiful to me. They are a nice counterpoint to the damaged lyrical content.”

In 2020, Imogen Clark turned lemons into lemonade, taking the setbacks of the year in her stride. ABOUT IMOGEN CLARK

Imogen Clark is an Australian singer-songwriter, hailing from the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, whose music ranges from arena-ready rock anthems to raw confessional indie pop.

Since 2016, the 25 year-old has released two studio albums and one EP – 2020’s The Making Of Me – and featured on a number of compilation albums. 

Cutting her teeth playing in local pubs in the Blue Mountains during her teen years before taking the stage with artists like Shania Twain, Ian Moss and Willie Watson, Imogen has worked relentlessly over the past decade building up her musical chops. Over the last few years Norwegian artist Tuva Hellum Marschhäuser – who records under the moniker Tuvaband - has proven herself a master of crafting songs that capture a special atmosphere in her sound, paint a shapeshifting world of burning emotion, and music that spellbinds.

Tuvaband’s debut album Soft Drop (2018) saw her writing songs that were airy, ghostly and effortlessly cinematic, while its follow-up, 2019’s I Entered The Void (which earned a nomination for a Norwegian Grammy) pushed her sound into rougher, heavier atmospheric rock. But what unites all her music is its raw intensity – her songs have fires inside them, and listening is like being pulled into the flame. With her new album Growing Pains & Pleasures (out 5/21/21), she’s set to take her songwriting to new levels and to adventurously push the boundaries of her musical world.

Tuvaband debuted material from Growing Pains & Pleasure live at the September 2020 Reeperbahn Festival and received a nomination for an Anchor Award – an accolade reserved for the most promising emerging musicians from the festival that was established in 2016.

While I Entered The Void was about isolation, the story of Tuva cutting herself off from society and the effect that process had on her, Growing Pains & Pleasures is about trying to find her way back. “When you’re in isolation you don’t meet many people”, she says, “and there are few impressions from the outside world. So, coming out of isolation can be an overwhelming experience - in ways both good and bad. A lot of the songs have feelings of fear; an irrational and vague, but constant fear”.  

As the first single and opening song of the album, “Growing Pains” (out today) is a starting point for the story within. "The lyrics for this song were the first I wrote for this album”, says Tuva. “It's about trying to hold onto the past, rejecting change in oneself and your surroundings. The song is about how it can feel to make a new start after a change: when you feel like a stranger to yourself, and you’re suddenly in need of new mental tools, to adapt to your new surroundings and to deal with this unfamiliar situation”.

In the end, Growing Pains & Pleasures isn’t a radical new vision for Tuvaband, but its songs have a strange magic in them, and most importantly, they have the burning honesty and emotional power so important in her music. That’s what anchors her to the songs, and is what makes this whole thing matter to her. “I need to feel something with the songs, I need the lyrics to mean something to me. All the work, the entire process, has to mean something to me. I wouldn’t sit and write lyrics if not to help myself get something out, because I have so much to get off my chest”.

Singer/songwriter and upright bassist Melissa Carper has unveiled her brand new single “Makin’ Memories,” the first from her forthcoming album Daddy’s Country Gold, set for release on March 19th. Carper’s refreshingly unique style calls to mind greats like Kitty Wells, Billie Holiday, and Loretta Lynn, beautifully conveyed in the grooves of the album’s 12 sparkling gems. Carper enlisted fellow bassist Dennis Crouch (The Time Jumpers) and producer/engineer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Margo Price) to co-produce the album and bring her dream to life. Recorded live to tape at Tokic’s analog studio wonderland The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, the album features Crouch (bass), Chris Scruggs (guitar, steel guitar), Jeff Taylor (piano, organ, accordion), Matty Meyer (drums, percussion), Billy Contreras (fiddle), with guest appearances from Brennen Leigh, Sierra Ferrell, and legendary pedal steel maestro Lloyd Green. “As a dish cooked up with the spice of many talented hands, there rightfully should be a line out the door to sample this new album by Melissa Carper,” says Americana Highwaysin its premiere of “Makin’ Memories.” “And it’ll meet all your expectations for a classic country music with a dose of carefree humor.”   

  As a child, Carper, who acquired the nickname “Daddy” years ago from her bandmates for always knowing how to “take care of ‘bidness’,” would lay her head underneath the family record player as she listened to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and other greats from her parents’ collection. After a childhood spent in her family’s country band, Carper attended the University of Nebraska on a music scholarship, spending much of her time in the library devouring every Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole album she could find. Around this time, Carper’s father gifted her a full collection of Jimmie Rodgers’ recordings, which was a pivotal moment in finding her unique style of songcraft.  

The wayfaring Carper soon found herself in the historic town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where she saw street performers for the first time. Busking seemed a very free and appealing endeavor, so Carper diligently learned all the old country songs she loved as a child. She soon relocated to music hubs like New Orleans, New York City, Austin, and eventually Nashville, oftentimes busking to make ends meet until gigs would come along. On the way, she founded award-winning bands like power trio The Carper Family, playing festivals and gigs across the globe, and on shows like “A Prairie Home Companion.” Carper also holds a spot in award-winning Arkansas foursome Sad Daddy, and founded roots duo Buffalo Gals with Sad Daddy bandmate and girlfriend Rebecca Patek. 

Her forthcoming solo record Daddy’s Country Gold is just that - 12 glittering Carper originals of the country, western swing, and jazz variety. We need more songs.’ That’s literally the accidental story of how I became Zayde Wolf."

SAN DIEGO’s Blind Owl Records is continuing to innovate the art of rock n’ roll with the release of“Saturday Night Sage,” the lead single from the forthcoming EP Sounds from the Shadow Factory, due out February 19th, and available for pre-order via on Bandcamp and  the Blind Owl Records website. The EP was inspired by the book of poetry and narrative prose Saturday Night Sage by Noah Lekas, released last year on Record Store Day. The book of poetry and narrative prose has garnered comparisons to Dylan, Patti Smith, Jack Kerouac, Nick Cave and Bukowski  that  came highly recommended by Punk Noir Magazine who called it called, “A brutal and brilliant poetry collection crowded with losers and loners, laments and lullabies, and booze and blood-stained torch songs for the twilight hours.” 

The book is about a blue-collar mystic looking for God and his place in Modern Culture.  Navigating whiskey-soaked revelations with religion, folklore and dwindling opportunity, a spiritual journeyman wades through Eastern philosophy, Western theology and the American highways and factories of the Midwest in search of resolve. More than just bar room tales of flagrant dispossession, Saturday Night Sage emerges from the shadows of crumbling factory-life; it gives voice to an often-undervalued American story. Examining the repetitive yet unstable duality of Midwestern life, Saturday Night Sage bets-it-all that a Blue-Collar work ethic is all you need to get out of the factory and Saturday Night.

The book's title poem, Saturday Night Sage was adapted by bay-area psych legends, Howlin’ Rain into a heady audio meditation. An improvisational piece of music, the track captures the exploration inherent in the poem, launching listeners across “utopian plains” and into the “slums of the shadow factory.”  "The Howlin Rain music here was dug out of a rehearsal recording from one of our past jams. It was the kind of thing we play to warm up when we first reconvene, usually someone is still changing guitar strings or setting up an amp and whoever is ready begins an improv and everyone joins in eventually, says Howlin Rain’s Ethan Miller.  “Dan Cervantes took what probably never would have been revisited, heard the spirit in it and brilliantly edited and overdubbed a few subtle elements to really make it 'a thing' and create a piece that could thread into Noah's fantastic Neo-Beat poetry. In the end, that off the cuff, 'found' music source is a really cool vehicle for Noah's words. “ 

Growing up in a working-class household, Lekas was introduced to the mystic almost as early as the menial. Surrounded by Catholics, Buddhists, Hare Krishna’s, Pentecostals, and Hippies, his introduction to the sage’s life of seeking was early and in depth. In Racine, Wisconsin ”The menial always lurked like a long rusty shadow”  says Lekas. Eastern philosophy, Western religion, universal spirituality and blue-collar ethos became the inspiration for the sage character. “He’s sort of everything I dream of being, and everything I’m afraid of becoming” Lekas recounts. While the book isn’t autobiographical, it is rooted in a visceral experience that is so Midwestern and defiantly counterculture that it’s impossible to separate the story from the life of the writer.  

The pre-order for Sounds from the Shadow Factory features a number of formats including vinyl, CD and a number of  bundles, that include signed copies of the vinyl (by both Noah and  Howlin Rain), the book and the incredible EP art and poster were designed legendary  Alan Forbes (Faith No More, Queens of the Stone Age, The Melvins, Mudhoney etc.), who did the cover art for the book.

MORE ON NOAH

Noah C Lekas is a poet, essayist, and journalist. His first book, Saturday Night Sage (April 13, 2019) is a collection of narrative prose exploring mysticism and menial labor in contemporary America. It was The Exterminator by William Burroughs and Hot Water Music by Charles Bukowski. Noah found Burroughs through a recording of The ‘Priest’ They Called Him that he did with Kurt Cobain and Hank through the band, Hot Water Music. Since then, music and literature have been inseparable for Lekas.    After calling all four corners of the country home, his work is as uniquely American as his perspective. Austin by way of Los Angeles artist Baby FuzZ releases  the  environmentalist arena rock anthem "Welcome To The Future., ”  the title track from his forthcoming full length album due out early next year.  “‘Welcome To The Future,’  is a glam rock environmentalist song, “ says Baby FuzZ. That sounds like a paradigm, but that's kind of the point. The lyrics comically inhabit the carefree lives of a Karen, a Kevin, and even an alcoholic orca to point out the fleetingness that is earth. I wrote it with Scott Harris (Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes) and Eric Nally (Foxy Shazam, Macklemore - "Downtown"), so it has this incredible arena rock energy that conveys the scale and importance taking care of the planet, but also hyper lowbrow lyrics that make the idea feel more like a dada indictment of our current outlook rather than a didactic ‘We Are The World" spinoff. ‘ I wanted it to set a more forceful tone for my newer music that raises the stakes and makes the things I'm pointing out feel more actionable." This genre yo-yoing is becoming BabyFuzZ' s signature style. Unapologetically jumping all over the genre map, with songs ranging from folk ballads to punk anthems and everything in between.  Last year Baby FuzZ, released his debut album Plastic Paradise independently and embarked on a 100 date DIY tour around the US. NASHVILLE, TENN. – Musician and actor David Cook released his second single “Strange World” today from his forthcoming EP due in February 2021 and available for pre-order along with other EP-centric exclusives at DavidCookOfficial.com.  

As David explains, “’Strange World’ is really my homage to this year. Staring out of the windows at the world outside, feeling disconnected from it, and trying to find those moments that would normally exist outside, inside.”

David spoke exclusively to Popculture.com, who premiered the single earlier this week, about the message which he hopes “fans will take [‘Strange World’] for something of their own amid this time of uncertainty.” Popculture.com is hosting an exclusive acoustic performance of the single today. 

It follows the first single “Reds Turn Blue”, released this summer,  a reference to the manic highs (reds) and lows (blues) of anxiety, something David has struggled to cover come since his Season Seven win on American Idol. As David explained to People.com: "This song became a therapeutic process for me, as a way to personify my anxiety and make it something other than me — which in an odd way has helped me navigate my relationship with it."

To capture that struggle, David worked with artist Justin A. Nixon to create a visual that was, “sci-fi and sinister” but left open-ended to represent “that constant battle between anxiety and myself.” The video premiered on Popwrapped.

“Reds Turn Blue” and “Strange World” are the first new music David has released since 2018’s EP Chromance. That same year, Cook made his Broadway debut in “Kinky Boots” as Charlie Price. “I’ve had conversations about finding creative outlets outside of being a musician, but the timing was never right. I love the collaborative aspect of theatre, the idea of being part of a creative team and working it out in front of an audience each night.”

Nashville, Tenn. - Nashville singer/songwriter Danielle Cormier has released a holiday-inspired piano ballad titled "This Time Last Year" produced by Adam Lester (Peter Frampton) and co-written with Karlie Bartholomew. Today, the video premieres at Popwrapped.

It's a very personal song as Danielle explains, "Karlie and I had talked about writing a holiday song earlier in the year and then we both suffered tragic losses; her grandfather passed away and then my father passes away about a month later. After that I knew the song had to be about how different the holidays would be without such important people in our lives."

Keeping with the intimate nature of the song, Danielle used personal home movies for the video: "They say that the firsts are always difficult after losing someone, especially the holidays. We wanted to write a holiday song about how everything changes after they are gone. The traditions you once knew are no longer the same. Unfortunately this year, a lot of people will be able to relate to that. This video compiles memories of Christmas’ past with footage from home videos and allows my father’s memory to live on.”

Chelsea Rana Art Advisory is thrilled to announce the opening of “L.A. : Views” at MAKI Gallery in Tokyo. The show, curated by Chelsea Petronko Rana, highlights the work of sixteen emerging and mid-career Los Angeles-based artists, and will be on on view from December 4 through January 16, 2021. Los Angeles is a city of multitudes – a thriving art scene at odds and in concert with the entertainment industries; indigenous land and frontier histories colliding with cutting-edge technology and architecture; a web of freeways connecting distinct beach, wetland, and mountain terrains. The artists included in the exhibition reflect this vigor, with works that express manifold interpretations of the region today. With this show, Rana is looking to spotlight the rich fabric of the Los Angeles artistic community and introduce the work by this exceptional group of artists on a global scale. “MAKI Gallery is a perfect fit for this show,” says Rana. “I have worked with the founders Masahiro Maki and Yoshimi Maki for quite some time, and they specifically have championed many LA-based artists. Japan has its own very rich art history, and there are many incredible collectors in Japan, but Japan still feels like it is distanced from the art world that we know here in Los Angeles. Art has always served as a great connector, breaking cultural and geographical barriers and I feel very fortunate that I am able to bring these two art world’s closer together, and thus making the world feel a little smaller.”

The city of Los Angeles provides inspiration and is the subject matter of a number of the pieces in the show. The work of Gabriella Sanchez, Amir H. Fallah, Shizo Saldamando, Jaime Munoz, and Greg Ito are inspired by rich immigrant culture and the variants of the immigrant experiences in Los Angeles. Amir H. Fallah brings together classical Western representational painting with the dense pattern-making of his Islamic heritage in bold colors and architectural canvases. Each holding an object like a talisman or sacred offering these contorted, anonymous figures shrouded in florals and other fantastic motifs speak to a personal narrative of belonging. Gabriella Sanchez takes a decidedly punk, militant approach. In her sculpture, “WE REAP WHAT WE SEW (Past and Present Patterns),” the eponymous text is emblazoned on a handmade flag alongside serape textile samples, bandanas, flannel and silkscreens of archival images documenting conflicts between Mexican immigrant communities and the American government. This aesthetic continues in canvas works which collage paint, neon graffiti and stencils with archival imagery. Painter Greg Ito’s flat, graphic compositions echo a mysterious landscape in transition, riddled with coded symbologies. A sky-blue butterfly flashes above a floating door, promising an alternative future timescape of a lush, wet, sun-basked paradise just beyond the threshold. Ito’s interest in narrative extends to his untraditional canvas choices, in this case a circle, in the past, a keyhole, a dome, each shape both devising and mirroring the corporeal world within his own illustrative universe. Shizo Saldamando portrays members of her own community with work rendered in paint and the ballpoint pen style of the paño tradition, first begun by incarcerated. Part homage, part documentation, the eyeline of each subject is witness to a changing city amidst accelerated gentrification and urban sprawl.

The diversity of Los Angeles is not only in the cultural make-up of the city but in the actual landscapes and geography. Sayre Gomez is known for his work of painting and interpreting scenes from the city. Gomez’s “Untitled” is painted to mimic a metal sign that reads SMILE, which is followed by a leering mouth. A chain extends from the middle of the object to the floor. 

An eerie and ambiguous reproduction, Gomez refrains the signage of the American West as manmade relics, evidence of a communal psychology all but disguised as banal. The Los Angeles Times said of his last show that “The vivid friction between his paintings’ flawless precision and their subjects’ utter disaster is the show’s bracing leitmotif. “ Lily Stockman dwells around the mystical with paintings of sumptuous geometries with centered simple, ambiguous, u-like shapes. Her paintings are abstracted versions of flora found around Los Angeles. Despite the hardness of these abstractions, Stockman’s hand is loose and intuitive. Her surfaces are ethereal coatings of diluted paint. Deeply concerned with color relationships, these linen canvases are intricate reflections on time and the physical body. 

“Contrary to the metropolitan melting pot, Los Angeles is a meeting point, an intersection of different attitudes, generations and cultural legacies, driven by desire and innovation as much as contrast and change, says Rana. “Making a left turn in this town is difficult, but as these visionaries can attest, if you want to get anywhere, just keep going forward, forward, forward.”

GREENVILLE, SC – Coming-of-age music-comedy “Electric Jesus” continues to charm audiences and critics across the country this fall with its latest win at the Rome International Film Festival 2020 for “Best Narrative Feature.”

“We were thrilled to be selected as Rome International Film Festival’s opening night film. RIFF is a well-curated, widely-respected, filmmaker-driven festival — certainly one of the best in the Southeast,” says writer/director Chris White. “Then, to be selected as RIFF’s Best Narrative Feature...we’re all so happy! “Electric Jesus” follows the ill-fated journey of a never-famous 80’s Christian hair metal band (316) who spends the summer of 1986 playing rock music meant to ‘make Jesus famous’.

Earlier in November, the film took home the awards for “Best Picture,” “Best Director” (Chris White) and “Best Supporting Performance” (Brian Baumgartner) at the 2020 Orlando Film Festival and “Best Narrative Feature” at the 2020 Fayetteville Film Festival.

Written and directed by Chris White, the film features Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), Brian Baumgartner (The Office), new/emerging stars Wyatt Lenhart (singer/guitarist), Will Oliver (lead guitarist), Gunner Willis (bassist) and Caleb Hoffmann (drummer) as 316, Andrew Eakle (sound man) and Shannon Hutchinson (preacher’s daughter).

With an original score and music by Daniel Smith (Danielson Famile), fictitious band 316 plays an otherworldly mash-up of 80’s hair metal and vacation Bible school that wears its teenage protagonists’ hearts on its sleeve while rocking their socks off. The soundtrack will be released on Joyful Noise Recordings in early 2021.

After a year of “unprecedented” events and cultural shifts that will  have a lasting effect for years to come Los Angeles songwriter and composer Elle Belle has risen to the challenge to answer that question, “where do we go from here?,” with a careful examination of events,  thoughts and feelings that have been swirling in his head leading into, and wading through this dumpster fire of a year.

Post Everything is about reckonings. Christopher Pappas, who writes and records as Elle Belle, had reached a level of emotional fatigue of the last few years that filled his heart with a deep misanthropic nihilism. Through personal, political, and cultural grieving, these songs rake through the ashes of an era and ask - where do we go from here? Post Everything is a journey through this nihilistic wasteland, and that if we dig deep enough, we can still find droplets of hope. “The reward of putting out an album is all the more sweeter after the year we’ve had,” says Pappas. “There’s a light at the end of the tunnel and I hope, Post Everything, despite its untidy bouts with nihilism, is a perfect soundtrack for this journey.”

Times of crisis and uncertainty have a tendency to make us nostalgic and yearn for the comforts of the past. Pappas lures the listener in from the get go with the very first song and  title track that generously tips its hat to the  90’s rock Pappas grew up on, and has garnered comparison to Dinosaur Jr./J. Mascis.  There are additional nuggets of comforting nostalgia in tracks like “Red Light Blues,” reminiscent of post-punk 80’s synths wrapped in the melancholy of the Smiths, “Holy Light” and “Standing Room Only,” that borrows from the early 60’s pop psychedelia of the Animals.

Pappas is artist’s artist, who in addition to writing all the songs, mixing a number of them, Pappas had a keen vision for  how to visually translate the music. The art work for the album, and singles,, “Post Everything” and “Everyone Knows (But They Won’t Tell You),” leading into the album release were all derived from photos Pappas took of his hometown.

“I had a recurring dream as a child where I would stumble upon a place in my hometown that I had never seen before, Pappas told Culture Collide. “This felt impossible in the small rural town of Auburn, New Hampshire, but there among the familiar geography, would be a road I had somehow missed. I’d wake up before I got the chance to explore, but the possibility that my hometown had places left to discover exhilarated me. So, I travelled back to my hometown in search of these hidden places. I’d retrace my steps to the edge of reality and dream and scan the landscape, looking for the street, or secret door that would lead me to that undiscovered place. There is a mishmash of influences—musical, political, personal—that were mixed into the pot when making Post Everything, and while recording the album I started to have that dream again.” Pappas describes   NH  as suffering from “urban fatigue,” which feels much aligned with unpolished rawness of Post Everything. Post Everything follows up the sprawling 20 track opus Wacko Gumbo that featured Lucius and Misty Boyce (Lord Huron, Sarah Bareilles) and his most recent release No Signal, that received rave reviews for its social commentary and his brilliant mixing of genres from dark pop, to post-punk, synth rock and a hint experimental.

Mixed with a variety of genres; psych-rock, prog, electronic, Elle Belle continues Pappas’ knack for rich, intricate songwriting. He has written music for NASA, composing the soundtracks for the Juno and Rosetta mission official docu-series. He also composed an award-winning musical (“Pope! An Epic Musical”) with the Wall Street Journal praising it, proclaiming “[Pope!] is proof that the musical [genre] isn’t dead!” He is also a prolific writer, churning out 2 T.V. pilots and a new full-length horror feature that are currently in development. His dense and eclectic catalog is why many consider Pappas as one of America’s most prolific and captivating under-the-radar artists.

GREENVILLE, SC – “Electric Jesus” - the coming-of-age music-comedy that follows the ill-fated journey of a never-famous 80’s Christian hair metal band (316) who spends the summer of 1986 playing rock music meant to ‘make Jesus famous’ – has won “Best Picture,” “Best Director” (Chris White) and “Best Supporting Performance” (Brian Baumgartner) at the Orlando Film Festival. The film is currently screening at film festivals across the United States.

Written and directed by Chris White, the film features Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), Brian Baumgartner (The Office), new/emerging stars Wyatt Lenhart (singer/guitarist), Will Oliver (lead guitarist), Gunner Willis (bassist) and Caleb Hoffmann (drummer) as 316, Andrew Eakle (sound man) and Shannon Hutchinson (preacher’s daughter).

With an original score and music by Daniel Smith (Danielson Famile), fictitious band 316 plays an otherworldly mash-up of 80’s hair metal and vacation Bible school that wears its teenage protagonists’ hearts on its sleeve while rocking their socks off. The soundtrack will be released on Joyful Noise Recordings in early 2021.

Los Angeles based artist and activist Monique DeBose is inspiring women to choose  “MORE,” with her powerful new single released today. “MORE has always been my personal anthem that I quietly kept in the back of my head for years,” Monique told Black Girl Nerds on her IG Live conversation  with the publication this week  “and now I hope it can be an anthem for  everyone who identifies as female . It’s so important to consciously decide as women what we are choosing MORE of for ourselves so we can band together and support each other to make it happen!”

The packs a punch with lyrics that state “It’s time for us all to take our ovaries off the shelf and choose MORE!”  The song has inspired  DeBose’s community who  have begun posting on social media in response to the message of MORE, and DeBose couldn’t be more thrilled: “The cool thing is that when we write down and declare to the world what we are choosing MORE of, we uphold each other and encourage our sister community to do the same,” says Debose“The world is challenging right now for all of us and we are all facing moments in which we feel that we don’t have a choice.  I sing this song to help women, myself included, to remember that they can always choose MORE.”

“MORE,”   is the follow up to the equally powerful song “Rally Call.” “Rally Call” was released on August 28th, a pivotal date in history in the fight for civil rights. It was the day Emmett Till was abducted in 1955, the day Martin Luther King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963, and in 2008 it was the day that Barack Obama became the first black man to accept the Democratic nomination for President, going on to be the first black President in U.S. history.   DeBose wrote “Rally Call” with Isaac and Thorald Koren as a call to action for the oppressed and those who have lived under the heavy weight of systemic racism for hundreds of years. The performance footage in the video was shot during the height of the George Floyd protests at the Great Wall of Crenshaw, a Los Angeles landmark depicting pivotal figures from African American history. The video garnered over 150K views upon its release striking a chord with people all over the world, including the United Nations, who invited DeBose to perform the song at their SDG Action Zone Conference last month. DeBose is not being coy about being an artist with a mission to empower the powerless and inspire change.  “MORE” is  a personal anthem that Monique wrote for herself years ago when she was a young college graduate taking a leap of faith and abandoning the corporate world to chase her dream of becoming a jazz singer. It had stayed in her head and made an appearance in the odd live set- until now. “Today, at this crazy time in the world, I felt compelled to bring this song to life- to get into the studio and record it and to shoot a video that speaks to women everywhere reminding them that they always have the ability to choose MORE for themselves.”

DeBose holds a master's degree in Spiritual Psychology and a BA in Mathematics from UC Berkeley.  Monique calls Los Angeles home, is married to a Brit, and is raising two compassionate, culturally intelligent boys. Her life and upbringing, being raised by an African American father from the segregated South and Irish American mother from upstate New York, is the inspiration for her work, pushing people to step out of seeing themselves and the world,  as black or white, but to embrace all of who they are and to live life in full color.

DeBose honed her craft at Billy Higgin’s famous World Stage jazz club in Leimert Park, as well as in various jazz bands.  She is a trained jazz vocal improviser, and once led a community of over 500 improv singers across the world.  In 2005 and 2007, she released two albums – Choose the Experience (featuring Kamasi Washington) and Choose the Experience 2 – and performed internationally, in India, China, London, and Amsterdam. This idea of “Living Life in Full Color” is the driving force behind her artistic output. DeBose received rave reviews for her one-woman show “Mulatto Math: Summing up the Race Equation in America” winning the  Producer’s Encore Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival before being transformed into a workshop which she has performed at UCLA and MindValley. DeBose was also a featured artist and performer at TEDx where she performed “Rally Call” live.

Austin Texas by way of Los Angeles Baby FuzZ has released his ethereal and psychedelic new single “Acid Night.”  Baby FuzZ is the audiovisual glam rock and “normcore"  brainchild of producer and songwriter Sterling Fox. After producing Lan Del Rey’s “Video Games,” Fox was on his way to becoming one of the most in-demand and successful pop songwriters in the business having written chart-topping hits for artists such as Gym Class Heroes, Madonna, Max Martin, Elle King, Avicii, Lana Del Rey, Britney Spears and more (see the full list HERE). Upon the election of Donald Trump, and at the peak of Fox’s songwriting career he disappeared from music and split for Canada, spending a year in Montreal, reemerging as Baby FuzZ.

Nashville-based, nationally-acclaimed 501c(3) Girls Write Nashville* is thrilled to announce Sing Through The Quarantine, the program’s newest student-written and produced album, set for release in early 2021. Each season, students enrolled in the program work with professional female artist mentors, learn to write and produce original music in a supportive community of peers, and are guided through the vulnerable process of releasing that work into the world. 

Due to the onset of COVID-19, the program, like countless others, was forced to adapt as Safer-At-Home initiatives began when the students were preparing to record. Girls Write Nashville pivoted and arranged a remote-recording project, created a full suite of low-cost virtual classes for K-12 students, and coordinated a Teen Takeover edition of Nashville’s social justice street newspaper The Contributor

“So much of the value of Girls Write Nashville is in learning leadership skills: becoming artistically resilient, speaking authentically, advocating for your voice, and overcoming self-doubt and fear of rejection,” says program co-founder Jen Starsinic. “Not making a record this year really wasn’t an option to us. It just didn’t seem within our mission or what we try to teach and model for our participants.” 

Students each wrote a “song from quarantine,” then worked, for the first time in program history, on recording their own songs at home, using a cloud-based recording app. Songs were then sent to local female studio musicians to help complete the tracks. The result is an inspiring, entirely remotely-recorded album of youth-written songs about life in 2020 that ranged from rap and spoken word pieces about racial justice to a cheeky trance-pop take on toxic relationships and social distancing, a screamo-metal catharsis about the pandemic, and bittersweet, beautiful embraces of the full emotional range of loneliness and isolation.  

Girls Write Nashville also transferred its programming to an original distance learning model which includes a new gender-neutral wing of programming called Loudmouth Community Music. Through Loudmouth, the Girls Write Nashville was able to offer free online songwriting classes to all Nashville students during the month of May and will continue programming in the spring semester. 

“Being in this program brought so much excitement to my day,” commented one young participant. “I really looked forward to this safe space where I could be creative and have a good time. I learned more about music and how much effort it really takes. I really appreciate music more now. I have had the opportunity to express my thoughts and feelings in my melodies and verses. Girls Write Nashville is the best program yet! Thank you to all the loving and amazing people involved.” 

Sing Through The Quarantine kicked off on October 14th with the launch of a crowdfunding fundraiser and the opening of free registration for a four-part virtual release celebration that will take place on November 8th, 15th, and 22nd with the last virtual event occurring after Giving Tuesday on Sunday, December 6th.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Girls Write Nashville’s scholarship fund which allows the organization to provide free, equity-based programming to Nashville students. Registration is now open for programming starting in January 2021. Girls Write Nashville and their co-ed wing Loudmouth Community Music currently offer free Girls Write Nashville programs to certain MNPS schools, their Girls Write Nashville All-City Mentorship program open to all students in Davidson County, and low-cost ($20-40/month) co-ed Loudmouth Community Music K-2nd, 3rd-5th grade, and middle and high school classes. All programs are taught by the organization’s trained trauma-informed teachers using original modernized music education curriculum focusing on songwriting and production and guided by the values of equity and empowerment. Nashville-based, Texas-bred singer/songwriter Natalie Schlabs has released her new album Don’t Look Too Close. The songs, written while Schlabs was pregnant with her first child, sparked much introspection and reflection, and allowed her to process her fears about motherhood. Each of the album’s nine shimmering tracks live in the tension between the beauty and heartbreak surrounding our closest relationships.

LISTEN: “HOW DOES IT FEEL”   

St. Louis-bred, Seattle-based singer/songwriter Lizzie Weber has announced her forthcoming EP How Does It Feel, due out on January 22nd, with the release of the title track, available everywhere today.  

"I wrote these three songs in isolation back in April,” Weber explains of the EP. “The nation had just begun to shut down due to COVID and these pieces sort of poured out of me in an unusual way. All of them were written in a single day which is not my typical songwriting process. I wrote 'How Does It Feel' when I was so focused on the meaning of feeling 'safe.' Am I safe to feel? Safe in my own skin and body? Safe to touch? And what was my personal experience was when confronting the emotions that left me feeling anything other than safe? It is an anthem of gratitude for having someone in your life that keeps you grounded in strength and resilience."  

“‘How Does It Feel’ features her breathtaking vocals paired with lyrics that everyone can relate to, especially at this time,” says Stage Right Secrets in the song’s premiere. "I’m quite proud of this song and hope it resonates with listeners,” Weber says. “In a time where so many are suffering, emotionally or physically, or both, I wanted to express my own vulnerability and make art that highlights how that openness calls for empathy from our closest loved ones and strangers alike." 

Weber credits her St. Louis roots for providing her a grounded foundation, strong values, and a sense of self - a self-awareness that enables her to write emotionally-charged music from a very vulnerable, personal place. Following the success of her 2014 eponymous full-length debut, Weber appeared on the cover of the Riverfront Times as one of “six artists to watch in 2015.” From there, she composed the music for the title track (“Vida Cafeinada”) of the documentary feature film Caffeinated.  

In the fall of 2015, she produced and self-released her rendition of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box,” and worked with Grammy-award winning producer Sheldon Gomberg (Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, Rickie Lee Jones). After spending the last two years both in Seattle and on the island of Fidalgo, Weber traveled to Iceland in March 2018 to collaborate with Academy Award-winning artist Markéta Irglová (The Swell Season/Once). Together, they produced and recorded and released two songs - "River" and "Free Floating.”  

Now, Weber is preparing to release her new three-song EP How Does It Feel in January 2021the title track, an anthem of gratitude, explores the meaning behind feeling ‘safe’ and finding strength in yourself with the support of loved ones. All three songs were written in isolation accordingly, this theme is explored throughout all three songs and focuses on what can truly unite us all: empathy, and love.

Los Angeles based songwriter and composer Elle Belle has released “Everyone Knows...” the second single from his third full-length album Post Everything due out on November 13th via Little Record Company.  "Everyone Knows..." was written about the impossible feat of trying to be everything to everyone and not excelling at any of it. There is so much time spent switching lanes that we end up in the middle of the road and Elle Belle is asking how many of us feel this way? Elle Belle's lyrics are straightforward statements such as .I’m too strange to follow, But not desperate enough to fold I’m too scared to let go, But so miserable in control....and Everybody Knows but they won't tell you." This is a refreshingly honest song in a world where we are consuming life's highlight reels on social media ...instead of the truth. But don't we all feel like this? 

“Everyone Knows”  is the follow up to the release of the title track, “Post Everything,”  a fight song about the internal fight against the dark nihilism that has grown inside us, that x Ghettoblaster Magazine said “Right from the start, the track bursts with thrashing guitar and punching drums, almost reminiscent of the 90s era garage rock staples that we come to know to cherish. “  The song posits that fascism in America came by farce, not by force, and blood is on our keyboards and T.V. remotes.  

“The work of Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Christopher Pappas (AKA Elle Belle) mixes the heartland earnestness of The War on Drugs with the bright synth rhythms of M83. The resulting mashup of aesthetics and production would seem to produce a sound that struggles against its own tendencies, but Pappas corrals these various bits of sound into a cohesive whole. The album Post Everything is about reckonings. Pappas had reached a level of emotional fatigue of the last few years that filled his heart with a deep misanthropic nihilism. Through personal, political, and cultural grieving, these songs rake through the ashes of an era and ask - where do we go from here? Post Everything is a journey through this nihilistic wasteland, and that if we dig deep enough, we can still find droplets of hope.

This album will follow up his debut opus, the sprawling 20 track album Wacko Gumbo that featured Lucius and Misty Boyce (Lord Huron, Sarah Bareilles) and his most release No Signal that received rave reviews for its social commentary and his brilliant mixing of genres from dark pop, to post-punk, synth rock and a hint experimental.

Mixed with a variety of genres; psych-rock, prog, electronic, Elle Belle continues Pappas’ knack for rich, intricate songwriting. He has written music for NASA, composing the soundtracks for the Juno and Rosetta mission official docu-series. He also composed an award-winning musical (“Pope! An Epic Musical”) with the Wall Street Journal praising it, proclaiming “[Pope!] is proof that the musical [genre] isn’t dead!” He is also a prolific writer, churning out 2 T.V. pilots and a new full-length horror feature that are currently in development. His dense and eclectic catalog is why many consider Pappas as one of America’s most prolific and captivating under-the-radar artists.

Nashville’s Zayde Wølf has released “Born Ready (Reimagined)” a reinterpretation of one of Wølf’s most beloved songs “Born Ready,” from his debut full length album Golden Age. “Born Ready (Reimagined)” is part of a series that sees Zayde Wølf mastermind Dustin Burnett reinterpreting some of his most popular songs. “Last year I hit one of those songwriting walls,” says Burnett on how the concept of the series started. “I couldn’t get over it. No new idea seemed compelling. I was listening to alot of soundtracks and started writing mini orchestral type themes and song ideas and mixing those with my older songs.
